Not as hot as previous Dell PowerEdge 600SC deal because of Celeron instead of P4. Nevetheless a decent deal.

Dell Small Business has the PowerEdge 600SC Celeron 1.8Ghz 128MB/40GB 48x CDRom, No OS, 1 yr Onsite warranty $499 - $100 off + $100 rebate - 5% coupon = $280 shipped free Plus tax where applicable.

Also free second 80GB drive with the purchase of first 80GB drive $70 or free second 120GB drive with the purchase of first 120GB drive $140 !

And don't forget to select free mouse and keyboard which are not selected by default.

Update 04/08/03: Even hotter now with Dell 15% off coupon. Check your e-mail for the 15% one time use coupon.

Get theP4 2.4 @533 and, of course, the 80 GBHDD upgrade (get 2 drives) for $439.60; or $70 more for two 120 GB drives.

Ebates or fatcash for another $10 and change for the above deal.

I have already purchase three of these servers. The best three things about this server:

1. Stable
2. Stable
3. Stable

The worst three things about this server:

1. No AGP
2. Loud
3. Finding PCI cards that fit (Silicon Image Raid cards - no go. Next, the Promise 133 TX on order)

I would recommend to go for the 1st 80GB with 2nd 80GB Free! That way your total will be $345.55 + tax. In effect, you will get additional $120GB for only $66.50 ($345.55 - $279.05 )!!!!

!!!!!, !!!!! Do yourself a favor - Do not buy this computer unless you use it for a workstation, or server.
!!!!!!, !!!!!! Buy something that doesn't sound like an airplane under your desk.
!!!!!!!, !!!!!!! Get an AGP slot, your scores will be better.
!!!!!!!!, !!!!!!!! You will need cards that fit. Do your research first.

Yes, this is thread crap. I do know what I'm talking about. A deal is not a deal for everyone. You need to know the advantages and pitfalls.

I will buy another because of this thread. Thanks.

To put a little perspective on this....the SC600 is a server and not a workstation. I got mine on the last deal and have to agree with it being a very stable little box. I put a Highpoint RocketRaid ata133 controller in mine and added an additional 256Mb of RAM. This thing makes a great MP3 server. I use it for a few other things as well. If you need a cheap server, buy this box. If you are looking for a workstation, move on. There are better deals for workstations.

V00DOO,

Where did you get a 15% off coupon? The only one I know if is 15% off for software software/peripherals. Are you sure you're not applying that particular coupon?

Ok so let me get this right...

I understand the differance between 3.3v and 5v pci cards.

But you CAN? put a universal or 3.3v pci card in a 64 bit slot? Just that the 64 bit interface will clock down right?

Anyone who says this server is loud doesn't know jack about servers. This is one of the quietest servers I've ever heard in my life. To be honest, it's quieter than my two desktops, but those are overclocked machines.

Also this thing is STABLE. I've got Win2k3 ENT running and it has yet to bluescreen, crash, or do anything abnormal. It has been up for about 4 days now (I shut it down every once in awhile at night just to let it rest) and It's awesome.

Good Deal. I went with the 2.4GHZ, 36GB SCSI and free 73GB SCSI on the last deal. $440 for an awesome server.

I will definitely agree about how quiet these are. I have a 1600SC with 2 SCSI 10,000 RPM drives and it is quiter than my desktop pc. I have no idea how people are complaining these are loud.

While, I agree this should only be for people who want a cheap server/workstation. I don't agree that it sounds like an airplane... it's quite quiet compared to lots of people's cases with lots of fans. Infact, it's quieter than a friends Alienware system that he just recieved last week. You obviously haven't heard some of Compaq/HP/Dell's mid to high range servers.... They are LOUD!

Some PCI cards are rehashed (not re-engineered) and made to fit to universal slots. Some of them may not work.

As for the noise pollution: Yes, this is a quiet server. For my own personal system I have the Antec clone with four panaflos and an Enermax P/S, P4 mildly overclocked to 2.8 and whisper quiet. I like to listen to music while I work. Why would anyone want anything louder for their own personal system? Low priced power systems are very cheap and do-able. For a server I have these working as internet appliances and I don't care how loud they are because they are not in my bedroom, or even in my house for that matter. Installing linux is a chore, but after all is done this is a stable well thought system. It is louder than most personal systems. In an office they make nice low cost workstations. In your house - why?

Agreed. This thing is LOUD

Anyone saying their desktop is quiter has one loud desktop.

I've got 3 computers side by side, Dell workstation, builtitmyself AMD and the 600C and the 600SC is louder than the other two combined.

Could the celerons have quieter fans? I have the 2.4Ghz P4.

Hey anyone use the new BIOS?

A side notes:

You can get 2x 36GB SCSI Ultra 320 hard disks and onboard Ultra320 SCSI controller for $350. Just choose the p4 model, where you can choose SCSI or IDE, and then switch back to Celeron in the CPU options.

Or you can keep the p4 and pay $450.

The origin link won't give you the choice for P4 model. To get this model, goto dell homepage, click Small Business, click Server, click Power Edge server and then click on Power Edge SC600 P4 model.

What kind of lawnmower do you have? I have the Dell Poweredge 600SC as mentioned above and it is, by far, one of the quietest computers that I have ever owned. I also have an Antec case with "smart fans," and the Dell is MUCH quieter than it is, despite the measures I have taken to make it a silent system. I would highly recommend this computer to anyone looking for a cheap system, whether they need a server or a workstation.

P.S. - For those of you who are wondering about the lack of an AGP port, the specialty "registered" memory, or the PCI slots: One could simply change out the motherboard with a simple case modification, and be all set to use whatever kind of video card or memory one wanted. Plus, the PCI slot problem would be taken care of as well.

Call me a dolt, an idiot or don't know jack but that's fine when it's a personal opinion on the loudness of servers. AT'ers are technogeeks and computer professionals that are technogeeks. Social skills are not high on the list of traits that we cherish or even understand. On the other hand we do our research. If anyone listened to you, whitehondacivic, and changed their MB then there will be a lot of blown MB and P/S. Dell uses proprietory P/S on many of their systems. Plugging a foreign P/S into a Dell can mean the same thing. Not all Dell Computers are like this however. I'm sure that you don't know if the 600SC is one of those computers. Do not give advice when you don't do your research. I purchased a Promise Fastrack 100TX2 based on an AT'er having success with RAID using this computer. An At'er I trust said that it worked. I trust that person because this community is based on sharing good information. I would rather you call me despicable and cruel. I may be, but any knowledge that I impart in this forum I research and, or, have personal experience. I receive many PMs for advanced information. I answer truthfully if I know the answer. I'll also tell you if I don't know.

Lastly, why would you want another MB in this loud case? Find a well built case that is not too thin in the side panels (muffles some sound), mount panaflos (or any other low noise fan), buy a Zalman (or any other low noise cooler) and buy a low noise P/S (or change the fan to a Panaflo). Quiet!

There is a new BIOS available BIOS Link

The rumors were that it addressed Non-ECC memory, but it doesn't.

I am amazed at the variety of opinions of the sound of this case. For me it is not an opinion, I have this thing sitting 3 feet from me and it is one of the loudest computers I have ever worked with.

I'm not complaining, it's a server and I knew it was loud when I brought it.

However one thing I have to wonder: Is the fan "variable speed" for anyone? I"m wondering if something is wrong with my computer, as the fan is always max speed even though the aire it is spitting out is icey cold.
