Just curious.

Remember, having an enlarged amygdala increases the chances of the person going into 'Fight or flight' mode, which has the consequence of shutting down access to the logical, thinking, part of the brain. IOW, these people are walking time-bombs. Should we try to defuse them, as a society?

People willingly take care of, and get diagnosed for, 'Enlarged Prostrate', why shouldn't they take care of their Amygdalas? Especially when an 'Enlarged Amygdala' can cause Road Rage, or a Mass Shooting.

Maybe, instead of a stick, we need a carrot. Increased insurance premiums for people with 'Enlarged Amygdalas', due to their statistically higher propensity to get themselves 'into situations', that could escalate.

This is not a political issue, so much as a public-safety issue for society. We don't let people drive cars while blind, we shouldn't let them operate cars or guns with an enlarged amygdala.

Mandatory 400 hours of watching Donahue,
Mr. Roger's Neighborhood re-runs to the rescue!

Seriously, are there any non-surgical procedures to shrink the Amygdala? I thought that I had read somewhere that there has been some progress with Mindfullness Meditation procedures.

Nope. Those people are the defenders of society.
What kind of society? One filled with explosive, emotional, reactional, often-violent, basket-cases, that can't think logically or sanely? That's not a society that I want to live in. I want a peaceful, intelligent, sane, society.

But they would keep an open mind while rampaging through the streets.

Good. Kill them ALL...let god sort them out.

Good luck with that...such a society has never existed in human history.

While we're talking about it, why don't we also force stomach stapling on people who are obese? I mean they're increasing insurance rates on everyone else, causing general harm to society, and it'd just be better for them. Why don't we force lobotomize people who have multiple personalities or other mental disorders that might make them manic or emotional?

You see where your logic fails?

Obesity doesn't cause Mass Shootings (that I know of, anyway).

Edit: And there have been court cases in which forced lobotomy, or ECT, have been prescribed.

Obesity certainly causes far more deaths than any enlarged amygdalas or even shootings for that matter.

Public health is public health, you can't zero in on the pieces of it that you personally deem "bad".

Maybe then, instead of, or included with "Medicare for all", we should also have "GYM Memberships for all". Offer a tax credit come tax time, if the citizen attends over 80% of their scheduled Gym sessions a year. (Would require check-in/check-out validation at their preferred Gym.)

That might actually be a good idea, and an overall win in terms of public health and GDP increase vs. cost.

We live in a small, out of the way town. Living here comes with a gym membership...of sorts. We're required to pay approx. $150/year for membership in the "community lub" which operates several swimming pools, (one indoor, 2 or 3 outdoor, summer-only) a few parks, and a small gymnasium with limited weight room facilities. In the approx. 11 months we've lived here...we've used the facilities exactly ZERO times.

That's because most people congregate inside buildings. When you pull a gun out, the first thing people do is run away and hide. Buildings make it difficult for shooters to stand in one place and shoot. Running is a fatty's kryptonite.

Even if you can get people to go to the gym, you can't make them work out effectively. Using your phone while sitting on the bike, pedaling at a blazing 0.5mph, is worse than not even working out at all.

while it might not be the most efficient use the equipment, it's still better than sitting in the lazyboy watching soaps...

You've heard of the EITC? Tax deductions for Homes, Children, Marriage? The idea is not so strange.

Most health insurance plans include a rider for gym membership up to some value (I've seen it $25-40 IIRC).

my current medicare advantage plan includes Silver Sneakers,,,which I used a couple of times before we moved. Now, there isn't a "full service" facility (pool, exercise/weight equipment) within an hour's drive that accepts SS. My NEW plan that takes effect in January is SUPPOSED to include a couple of facilities about 30 minutes away for me to not bother to use... :p

I have an elliptical in my family room. Wife wanted it there.

My five year olds play on it. It does not get used by the person who decided it must be there.

No one in the USA is gong to promote good mental health because they are not going to promote good physical health. That's just the way the USA is built and run. Also, most anti-gun politicians would rather launch into a tirade the number of people killed each year do to guns when in reality 2/3 of them are suicides and not directly hurting anyone else. I think what we need to do to reign in the unbridled population growth is to get a chemical, or two, into the food chain to get that part of the brain enlarged.

So, orchiectomies for men who have excessive testosterone levels which makes them too aggressive and particularly towards women. Let us enter into fascism with joy
