For anyone that has seen The Avengers, is the 3D worth it at all? The theater that I go to added two more midnight showing screens, but they're not 3D. Personally, I don't really like 3D that much as it is, but if I hear the 3D in the movie is good, I might want to at least give it a shot.

Oh yes. It's quite possibly one of the best, if not the best, 3D conversion I've ever seen; especially the final battle and 3D explosions were very impressive. I would say you should give it a shot. I just got back to the US (saw it oversees), and I'm absolutely anxious to watch it again in 3D.

Unfortunately, the only 3D midnight showing had maybe 3 seats left (the theater has assigned seating) and they were on the extreme sides of the theater. I ended up getting a nice front row seat for one of the 2D midnight showings. As a note, it's balcony seating, so front row is not the usual neck torture that you may have envisioned. :p

If I like the movie a lot, I'll consider seeing it again in 3D. Maybe an early morning showing next weekend.

I got advance AVX (reserved seating) tickets for Avengers in 3D today.

Shoulda gotten them earlier as we had to settle with seats to the side, but it's better than in front.

I didn't really want 3D, but of all the theatres with AVX it was the only one with half decent seats left.

Friday night @ 10.30 :D

Haywire - 5/10: I didn't especially love this. The main actress wasn't especially believable. I understand that she's a real athlete so they were probably going for realism in stunts and fighting vs. good acting. That said, some of the fight sequences weren't very good either. The story seemed like it was trying to be more complex than it really was and I didn't understand the point of Michael Douglas' character at all. Gets a 5 for various single shot parkour and fight scenes that were okay.

IP Man - 8.5/10

Not sure how much of this was true, but if he actually
beat the Japanese master and lived to tell about it then that is mind boggling.
Loved the cinematography, very matrixy but even better. While the story isn't going to throw you for many loops, I really loved this one but maybe because I love the asian martial arts.

Regarding Avengers, my tickets are ready for Friday in 3D! Can't wait.

Alien: 2003 Director's Cut :awe:/10

This time, I noticed just how awesome the set design was for a 1979 movie. Amazing.

One of my favourite blu-rays. Looks amazing and the movie holds up so freaking well.

Black Mirror - 8.5/10 (overall): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2085059/

Episode 1 - 9/10:
Watching this was excruciating, but in a good way. Kinda made worse cause I felt no satisfaction at the end. The plot was somewhat novel, and I guess I agree with the conclusion (last few minutes), but lets just say I would have went another way. Still, well done.

Episode 2 - 7.5/10:
I probably liked this more than you did. I was actually hung up on the bike generator thing. Doesnt seem like enough energy to power the TV's in front of them, let alone the community services. But I detest reality tv and these stupid talent shows, so I felt at home with this episode.

Episode 3 - 9.5/10:
While I enjoyed it, I saw the outcome coming a mile away.
I used to be like this with email and chat logs with an ex. If I had the grain implant it wouldnt have lasted a week!
Still very enjoyable.

I would give the season as a whole a 9.5/10. Its like a better executed, modern Outer Limits. I look forward to seeing more.

I agree on the bikes; I honestly was not sure what that was even about since it seemed kind of ridiculous to imagine it would be powering everything. I also wanted them to get skinnier over time since all they really did was bike all day. It wasn't awful, I just did not enjoy it as much as the others.

For the last episode I did have an idea of where it was going, but I thought it was very well done regardless; very well executed story and effects (nothing lavish, but they worked well).

Are they doing more episodes? I did not see that anywhere, but hopefully they do.

I assumed as much. Here is an excerpt from an article:

Do you have ideas buzzing around for a second series of Black Mirror?

"Yes, there's several ideas for more stories that we didn't do. There's a whole script written that we didn't do. Yes, to put it mildly."

Been in my queue for a while also. Is it good sci fi or just crap with bad acting, bad writing. Horrible direction, etc. Does the movie bring anything new to the table or is it just the same story with different characters?

The first half is great, and the story builds, but it does stumble at times. It's hard to really explain it without spoiling it. Near the end it seems like the story was tacked on simply to add more twists, but overall a good sci-fi flick if you are a fan.

I think they did a fantastic job with the tech; seeing as the CG is at a minimum, but what CG there is looks great (except the sky, but the alien bounty hunter looks badass).

Dead Set (2008) - 9.5/10

Zombie breakout on the set of Big Brother. Yup, the actual British version of the show. I think that might have more cache for Brits, as I think they have former contestants who get zombified. Its very well done, and on par with 28 Days Later and Walking Dead. Its fairly serious, graphic, some boobies, and little to no comedy. Only 5 episodes. Its available on blu ray. BTW, it was written by the guy who wrote Black Mirror, which is how I stumbled upon it.

Ahh yeah, I've had this one waiting for ages and just never get around to watching it. I'm going to have to squeeze it in as it sounds like I'd love it.

KT, did you ever get around to seeing Hesher?

Recorded it a while ago and watched it tonight...thought it was really good. The acting is superb. It's definitely not a typical Hollywood movie in story or approach, it's a character driven "indie". It's exactly the kind of movie I really like; unique, very well acted, entertaining, a little confusing (at first), unpredictable.

I still say Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood and the kid in the movie, Devin Brochu, was exceptional. I give it an 8.5/10.

The Big Year - 5/10 - thought this was supposed to be funnier than it was. Fairly boring movie unless you like birds.

The Fighter - 8/10: had this in my queue a while and because it appeared high on instantwatcher most popular, I finally clicked on it. Didn't know much about this movie going in and don't even like boxing that much but it was a good [true] story though some of the characters were annoying. A feel-good story, obviously.

Why didnt they snip the doctors tendons when they captured him in Hannibal?
In fact why dont they do that more often in general? The guy always gets away no matter how well he's been tied up. If you did some precise medical damage they got no way to move, restrained or not.

At the very least take a hammer to the joints.

Not yet unfortunately. I definitely want to since it sounds exactly like something I would like. I'll have to check if it pops up on my movie channel, since the disc probably will not show up for quite a while. Glad to hear you liked it.

The Avengers - 7.5/10

All the reviews and ratings project the movie as being the perfect super hero movie. This is not a perfect superhero movie by any means. It was entertaining no doubt, and subtle changes to Bruce Banner and Hulk paid off really well. I really really love RDJ playing the role of Iron Man. To this day.. I still feel IM1 along with Spiderman 1 & 2 are the best marvel movies ever made, and Avengers did not manage to change that. Captain America was Ok I guess, as was Nick Fury(What is the use of Samuel L. Jackson if he does not get angry? I really expected him to utter the one Fuck that is allowed in PG-13 movies.)

Hawk Eye was fine, but WTF was going on between him and Black Widow? Yeah, we got so see some nice ass shots of SJ, but she was the weakest of the bunch. I also expected to see Thor having more screen time in this movie seeing Loki was his brother and they a thing or two going on between them. The guy who played Loki was good, I enjoyed his role in this movie. The action segments were good, but nothing surprising given the budget.

I have rant to make here. What is the Hollywood obsession with sparks? Does it have a catnip kid of effect on their post production team? Every damn explosion is paired or followed by these huge sparks.. there is absolutely no reason for them. They make the effects looks cheap and unrealistic. Yeah, that troubled me while watching the movie. I think I am turning into a massive snob.

I live in a boonie in the mid-west and I had to wait in line to go see the movie for 30 mins, and this was the afternoon show.

You watch it in 2D or 3D?

Can't really argue much with your review; I feel about the same. Crazy this thing has already made over $640 million worldwide.
