FWIW: reviews also tend to say this but I found the movie to be hilarious even though pacing was kinda crappy.

Yup, the original 3 films are finally starting to show their age. It's hard to appreciate them anymore. Must have been amazing to be a teen and seeing these from 1977-1983 though.

I'm rewatching the original 3. Episode 4 is tough to watch (4/10). Episode 5 was much more enjoyable (9/10). And episode 6 is probably being viewed tonight. (?/10)

I think the 7/10 is a fair review. Take away all knowledge of the previous movies and this one was just kind of a meh/10. Having said this, I was going to say that episodes 4,5,6 were better but I'd actually say that this one was better than 4. I think I did previously say this but I am changing my mind. I hope Episode 8 does not suck.

Yeah, i gave 4 a 6/10
5 a 8/10
6 a 7/10
7 was certainly a fun movie to watch, but as someone without any devoted love for the original three, it felt like a fan service movie in a many ways.
No real rewatchability for me i don't think.

I read the same reviews and went in with tempered expectations. Any QT fan should be more than satisfied however from the overall package. I personally did not feel it to be slow (as some reviews complain) though the exposition takes bit which isn't exactly unique in his films. Overall I did not feel the film to run long even at the length of the roadshow presentation.

did you not feel that the story was painfully obvious? to me, it was a 10yo kid's idea of "a brilliant script".
and yes i do appreciate other filmmaking aspects but the plot & storytelling need to be on point, or it's just another Jupiter Ascending. or Cloud Atlas.

Oh wow, welcome back stranger. Where'd you disappear to for the last few months?

Spotlight - 7/10
This was really quite good, but i was so tired at the time, so probably not the best time to have gone to see it as it's a bit slow. I kept struggling to stay awake. Will need to rewatch as it probably deserves higher.

Brooklyn - 9/10
And here's the gem of the last while, by far.
Saiorse Ronan :wub:. She is amazing.
This is a gorgeous poignant story.

Now i just need to find time to see Carol before it disappears from the one theatre playing it here. :/

I was travelling.

I loved Spotlight! Just an awesome procedural and did not go over the top with the emotional stuff. Loved it!

I've almost seen Brooklyn twice now, but I keep skipping it to see other things. I'll have to try and catch it before it leaves the theatre.

That there is a cabin full of bad people and thus, most likely, lots of bad things are going to happen in a Tarantino-ish manner. That was pretty much evident from the film's marketing.

This is what I figured. Basically reservoir dogs with an updated cast set as a western.

The Martian - 6.5

Typical Hollywood "American feel good" movie filled with cliches and stereotypes. No depth, cardboard-cut-out characters, predictable. Just pretty to watch nice, mindless, simple entertainment, similar to "Independence day" or your random off-the-mill Marvel superhero movie.

Yep. I understand that it couldn't have the feel of the book and still work as a feature-length movie but I was still hoping it was more than that. Could have been great as an HBO mini series with time to go into specifics.

Tangerine

Definitely not mainstream. Shot on a bunch of iPhone 5S phones with a $100000 total production budget, in the underbelly of Los Angeles, about the crazy and sad love lives / relationships of transvestite prostitutes. Feels like a harsh documentary, but it's actually a comedy. Dramedy.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 96%.
Metacritic gives it 85%
I give it 7.5/10.

Continuing this trend, I haven't even seen it and I give it a 6.4 out of 10 so that I appear to be more discriminating and harder to please than you. :)

I mentioned this a couple of months ago, but it's worth mentioning again. Spotless on the Esquire channel. It's about a crime scene cleaner and how he and his brother get involved working for criminals. It has Brendan Coyle from Downton Abbey as the main heavy but the other leads are quite good as well. The plot, so far anyway (episode 7) has been generally unpredictable. Since this takes place in London, the accents can be a little difficult to understand so I would recommend subtitles. You can follow most of it w/o them, but you'll miss things like local idiomatic expressions, proper names, etc.

Heh. I'm not totally out of the range, as IMDB gives it 7.1/10, and Rotten Tomatoes' score is actually a percentage positive, not a how-good-it-is rating. Although out of the 100+ reviews at RT, 96% are positive, the actual score average for those reviewers is 7.9/10. So actually, my 7.5/10 is exactly in the middle of those two sites, coincidentally.

Pretty much this, with a lot of dead air.

Still think reservoir dogs was better, but not everyone agrees on his movies to begin with.

Hateful Eight 7/10

The Major was one angry black dude.

didnt like the plot hole.
How did the bad guys know the sister was going to be at that inn?
how did they forecast the weather such that they knew the Bounty hunter has to make a detour and stop at the inn to avoid the storm?

My recollection is that the weather was already starting to turn. One of the characters talked about how they'd have a couple days stuck inside to kill Kurt Russell's character and to be patient.

I love Reservoir Dogs so I'm thinking I might like it but I definitely can wait to see it. I rather see The Revenant first.

IMHO you'd be right.

I'll give The Revenant a 9.2/10, personally I liked it much better that The Hateful Eight.

It does come off as a darker version of Jeremiah Johnson, I'd say it's Leonardo's personal version of a Dances with Wolves/The Last Samurai/Gladiator/Castaway movie. as far as an acting milestone.

I think he pulled it off pretty well and would be surprised if the movie doesn't garner several awards.

Just musing out loud, but I actually did like DJango Unchained up until the time Leonardo showed up in that one, then The Revenant and The Hateful Eight come out opposite each other ?

Did Leonardo have a falling out with Tarantino over Direction in the last Western he made ?

Probably not, but seemed a bit odd to me with the timing.

The wait for 1/8 is killing me!

...but I will wait. I will watch it in the largest format possible.

How much control do directors have over release dates? I always figured that the studios made that decision but with someone as influential as Tarantino, I can imagine he has at least some input.

Huh? Was Leo supposed to work with Tarantino indefinitely just because he did for one other movie?

Basically none since that's not their job.

This is the 3rd or 4th film of his to come out at Christmas. It's called counter-programming and has served him well in the past. The timing of the Revenant release is largely a play at awards season...that it has DiCaprio is just coincidental.
