It's been a while!
Lots of rewatches for me the past couple months for some reason. Some movies i just have to see again (and again)...

Interstellar - 10/10
I know there are flaws with this movie, but i just don't care.
Everything i love about it overwhelms any concerns i do have.
I've seen this twice in theatres now, and would go again. :D

Palo Alto - 8/10
Gia Coppola can direct, too, it appears :D

Safety Not Guaranteed - 8/10
A pleasant rewatch.

Underworld: Awakening - 7/10
Underworld series is a guilty pleasure for me. I blissfully ignore the faults in them and just strap in for the ride.

American Psycho - 7/10
Roommate is a massive fan of this, so we had to watch this.
I'm not such a fan, but i bumped up my original 6/10 to 7/10 for the amazing acting.

Inglourious Basterds - 9/10
As someone who doesn't really like Tarantino's stuff, this is really is a good one, enough for me to watch more than once.
I  Melanie Laurent!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - 6/10
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - 6/10
Ugh, the highly unnecessary trilogy is over.
$20 to see the last one in IMAX 3D was not the smartest use of money, but friends were going and had an extra ticket...
I absolutely loved Lord of the Rings, and pretty much every single thing that was awesome about that trilogy seemed to have been left out of the Hobbit ones.

Byzantium - 9/10
Had to rewatch this due to being reminded of it in here.
Second favorite vamp movie i've ever seen, easily.
The coastal UK? town setting = gorgeous, reminded me of Under the Skin.
Love the sound of the ocean waves :D
Great acting from Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan.

August: Osage County -- 8.5 / 10

Wow. Because I wasn't in the mood, it took me three goes to get through it. This part of the first review on imdb sums it up nicely:

This isn't a movie for everyone. It's exhausting, it's full of really despicable people, and it's mighty depressing. But the acting is so terrific, the roles so strong, that you don't want to miss it.

Some takeaways:

Is there a better actor on our particular planet than Meryl Streep?

Because of some early lightweight/medium weight roles and all her attendant celebrity hype, I never thought much, either way, about Julia Roberts. Guess what? That woman can act!

Chris Cooper is always quietly excellent in whatever he's in.

Juliette Lewis can play anything from a boozy, ditzy, oversexed twerp to another boozy, ditzy, oversexed twerp. I love her anyway!

To be fair: since we don't know anything factual about this event, you could film 3 space aliens engaging a brown turnip in debate whilst it is suspended over a dunk tank of boiling water and claim that it is just an accurate depiction of Christ's execution. :p

Personally, I watched about 20 minutes of Mel's anti-semitic tirade and changed the channel. Shame, because Mel has made some awesome flicks. Personally, I see no value in defining Christ by the way he died rather than the way he lived. The craziest and most deplorable of Christians seem to put great value in this part of the story, in my experience, and it always makes me wonder.

:awe:

I don't know, I still have never watched it myself just from reviews of people I knew that did see it.

And knew a few that I thought would have when it came out, and said they weren't going to bother with it.

As far as Gone Girl goes btw, I fell asleep watching it a second time, so there is my opinion.

I thought Nightcrawler was better myself.

The wife loved Gone Girl, but ......

The Hobbit sad to hear about from most reviews, but just dragging that over three films was stretching things to begin with.

The one book was shorter than about any of the trilogy.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the first time i have ever seen a movie in IMAX 3D and i was blown away by how much better it was than standard 3D. It was definitely worth the extra $6 dollars for the ticket and the 2 hour drive...

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - 3/10

It should really be called The Hobbit: Another movie to take your money, because it is pretty crappy. Being a big fan of the book, I just hate this being stretched out into 3 movies.

Because Prometheus was full of plot holes galore, it didn't feel complete. Plot holes is just the tip of the iceberg. I love Ridley Scott as well but there's just so much wrong with that movie.

I didn't notice many of the wholes the first time through. I was just at the theater to enjoy a fairly mindless romp. After seeing it, I didn't understand the hate. Then I read synopsis that discuss each one. And ya .... holes .... HUGE HOLES.

Bill Burr: I'm Sorry You Feel That Way -- 7/10
If you like Bill Burr, you'll enjoy it. If you can't stand the guy, don't bother. I do think he went on a little too long about religion -- and no, that's not something that offends me, it just went on way too long and wasn't really that funny -- but other than that it was pretty good. Available on Netflix streaming.

Is there a better actor on our particular planet than Meryl Streep?

No. I'd have no problem with someone casting her as Batman. She could do it. :D

Coherence - 7/10, saw it free with Amazon Prime. not bad, kinda creepy, ending could be better. According to IMDb, the movie was shot with a budget of $50k and over five nights in a single location with dialogue that was largely improvised.

In case you didn't know, they place such great emphasis because, for whatever reason, us sinners could only be "saved" because God lived as the only sinless man and suffered / died / went to hell on behalf of all us sinners.

Right; and this totally ignores all of his supposed teachings. Passion plays became popular in the middle ages because life just flat out sucked--and I believe this was the same time that heavy emphasis was first placed on the role of Jews in the trial and execution; fear of Jews being quite high in the 13th-14th centuries.

focusing on the violence and death as a means of salvation is tantamount to accepting that you are excused for anything you may do in life, as long as you just pray and ask for forgiveness.

Forget all the years of the dude's preaching--might as well whitewash it. Torture Porn and religion are an interesting combo to be sure, but I think pointing out to those that truly believe the veracity of what they are watching is mostly a late-period interpretation of an event, influenced entirely by contemporary fears and politics, would simply be over their heads.

:D Seems many type-cast actors don't get any better, or wear out their welcome. While maybe not a dynamic actress, one thing she does have going for her is controllable charisma. She can play a side character and not take over, or play the main role and keep attention. Many actors that pull of all sorts of subtle character quirks can't manage that, but she can (off the top of my head, Fairuza Balk is another).

American Horror Story: S3 - so that's where that GIF came from!/10

Not quite as good as S2, but still very good, with Lisa Rabe bringing the crazy sexy, but full-on this time. I like Jessica Lange as this bitch better than the last one (will they put her in a nice role, at some point?), too. Taissa Farmiga is more believable in this season than the first. And, of course, how can you not love Kathy Bates?

Speaking of GIFs, I need to check on Lost Girl. They had best have Ksenia Solo back by the time I can watch a new episode or two, or else...well, it will just be too dry, because the rest of the cast are all straight men for Kenzi's jokes, and the writing needs some comedic breaks that it wasn't getting with her dead.

The Babadook - 5/10

This is an independent Aussie psychological horror film that was clearly made on a shoestring. I went into it with high expectations because it seems to be universally acclaimed (98% on RT). I don't really understand the enthusiasm for it. It's not a horrible film but I didn't find it particularly scary, and neither of the two characters who are in nearly every scene (a widow and her son) were likable or relatable, nor did they behave intelligently in response to their situation. I don't know that I would recommend this film even to horror movie buffs (of which I am one).

Is that worth 8/10, though? I can't disagree on the directing, but the characters and story were too unreal. Or, is it that people in California really are as crazy as the rest of us like to think they are?

Agreed. I caught it on TV again, this weekend. An awesome-bad movie, it is.

Sure, but you are missing something pretty big. Jews and Hebrews needed innocent sacrificial lambs and doves and such to atone for their individual sins long before Jesus was a thing and Christians do not believe that you have truly accepted Jesus' atonement if you believe you can go on freely sinning and just ask for forgiveness. There is a distinct difference between repenting simply asking for forgiveness once the dirty deed has been done. Guess which one Christianity expects?

Sure, there are some Christians ignorant of their own doctrines who will say that all you have to do is keep asking for forgiveness, but that doesn't mean it is what the doctrine says. Any valid condemnation must address the doctrine and not some ignorant assumption.

Big Hero 6 - 8/10. Could have been 9 or 9.5 but too cliche. San FrancisTokyo? Really?

Night at the Museum, Secret of the Tomb - 7/10. Could have been the worse of the franchise. Just as The Hangover movies, this one moved to another location with very much same cast and same trick. Nothing new.

Interstellar - 8.5/10. Very good but the ending was just freaking confused to me. Fifth dimension? "They"? Gravity? What in the world. The Nolan brothers are playing with our heads again as they did with Inception (real or not real).

Freaks and Geeks: 9/10
Binge watched the first season on Netflix over the weekend. I have always heard great things about this series, and finally had a chance to check it out. What a fantastic show!! Great cast and excellent writing. I really loved this show and feel sorry that it never got beyond the first season. It had so much promise, it is hard to understand why it was canceled.

I probably never watched the whole thing start-to-finish before. I've probably only seen parts of it -- edited for TV (ugh).

I took my wife (then girlfriend) to see that one in the theater. It was pretty much packed full and I was almost the only person laughing out loud. I think she was a little embarrassed but somehow she stuck with me. The scene where he is eating grits (trying to get just one on his fork) gets me every time. "I've never actually seen a grit before"

Fred Gwynne was awesome in that movie.
