Like watching poltergeist for the first time in 2014.

Exactly.

I guess for me it depends on the movie. I'm too young to have seen any 80's movie when it was originally out but the good ones I can definitely enjoy.

Of course and so can I. My favourite film of all time is from the 60s and I was not alive back then. I just find that the majority of films people adore from the 80s and 90s are bumped up due to nostalgia and are not necessarily objectively good. Again, nothing wrong with that, it just gives me pause.

expendables 3 - 9/10 - i liked the first one, didn't really like the 2nd one, but just rented the 3rd one cause redbox didn't have anything else new i hadn't seen. and holy shit, this movie was AWESOME! just a flat out fun as shit movie. balls to the wall action. the beginning with wesley snipes was awesome too, i love how he made fun of himself in the movie. it was done so perfectly. and then arnold also making fun of himself ... just so well done. the whole movie was just very well done about people being washed up and getting old, and the new guns coming in lol. it was just done so very well. and the action scenes were very good too. sound was incredible in the movie as well.

I haven't seen the first two, could I skip them and just watch 3? Or is there references / plot continuation from 1,2 to 3?

you could definitely skip the previous ones. i actually had to imdb a few characters to remember if they were in the earlier ones, but it doesn't really matter either way.

For first time watches? Yes, sometimes. I mean it really depends on the film; I watched Paris, Texas (made in 1984) last weekend for the first time and it was an immediate 10/10 for me but I find a lot of the bigger films are not crafted quite so well and are inflated due purely to nostalgia.

Nothing wrong with that at all, I do it myself, but it just makes me a bit trepidatious when watching these things for the first time thirty years later.

Paris, Texas is one of my favorite "small" films ever. Rented it back in the way back knowing absolutely nothing about it just because I was in the vid store and wanted to come away with something. It turned out to be a finely cut gem of a film, and began my long-distance bromance with Harry Dean Stanton!

How was your second cinematic visit and view of interstellar ?

In case you weren't joking, I said I would go see Birdman again, not Interstellar. But since I a) don't go to the flicks that often and b) almost never go alone when I do, it'll probably be gone from the local theaters before I get that together.

I will "consume" it when it comes on the post-release market, including buying the DVD/BR if that ever becomes available.

Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 6/10

Went with the family to see it last night and was pretty disappointed. The first two I found pretty entertaining for what they were but this one not so much. Just seemed to drag on. Not worth the movie theater price.

Elysium 7/10.

It was a nice movie. The villain in the movie is portrayed by Sharlto Copley, who played Wikus(the main character) in district 9. Lot of special effects. I did find it strange however that such advanced medical technology was available and advanced robotics and the power sources for the air vehicles were available but there was still a lot of poverty. It doesn't make sense.

That makes sense. I would have expected a renaissance because people could devote their time to studying and becoming enlightened. They could devote their time since they do not have to work anymore and food and housing is available. But that is wishful thinking i am afraid... Even for our future.

On a side note, Kruger was singing a South African song in the movie to a young girl. I could understand it partially. :)

This is a big fear with the models showing even professionals like doctors, lawyers and engineers will be able to be replaced by automations in the next few decades.

It becomes a challenge of what's going to generate a wage and if the wealthy are willing to support the non-wealthy.

The previous stories really aren't needed for this movie. The movie is really action packed and while it may not be an Academy Award winner; you'd have to be gumpy cat incarnate to not enjoy it.

Under the Skin finally started to be a bit coherent on the second real viewing.

Not one of those things you watch once or casually.

Elysium I still hadn't watched but will be in a bit, I thought District 9 was very good myself and had let that one slip through the cracks.

As far as older movies, if you've never seen Catch-22, it's great.

6/10 Transformers 2 , revenge of the fallen.

Brain in viewing mode. Not bothering myself about some bad acting and the story line. I enjoyed it.

With the essentials and the mass-produced luxuries covered by automatons, the value of a skillfully hand-made item will increase drastically. Artisans and craftsman will blossom. Designers and people able to create new and unique designs, produced by automatons or not, will flourish. Even mass production will not need to be so massive to support the costs, so smaller production runs of more unique and varied items will appear requiring more unique and varied designers. Expression will be more important than ever. Granted, someone has to be the consumer. We can't all be artisans, but a lot more will be.

Would have been a fine movie if all the best jokes weren't in the previews/commercials for it. I hate it when movies do that. It wasn't bad at all but yea, they should have not shown all the jokes before hand.

Were you disappointed because it was more of a setup for part 2 or were you disappointed because it was legitimately bad?

I haven't seen it or read anything about it, so I'm just curious. I did like the first one a lot but was "meh" about the second.

Step Up Revolution - 3/10 Just awful. The acting was terrible, the story was so contrived, and the dancing wasn't even that good (compared to the episodes of America's Best Dance Crew that I've seen). Overall, a bad movie. Why do they continue to make these?
