Birdman -- 11/10 -- This was the movie I wanted to see instead of Interstellar. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I got to see Interstellar. But this is the one movie I was not going to miss. I thought I'd like, but I truly had no idea how much!
The writing is propulsive all the way through, often underscored, but never overwhelmed or intruded upon, by an appropriately discordant jazz score. All the acting is spot on, even great. They take this amazing script and run with it like the consummate pros they are.
The movie nails the human condition time after gut-punching time. It is FIERCE and it is, as great literature often is, repeatedly LOL funny. I went with a buddy for his birthday who had already seen it, but wanted to see it again. I seldom do this, but I'll be seeing this again, and soon. It is that good.
The cinematography, the atmospheric use of the back stage rooms and narrow corridors in an aged, cramped, New York theater are awesome. The segues from the wings or behind the backdrops to the stage in mid-play work seamlessly, and poetically, every single time.
The movie takes several allegorical leaps. This is always chancy, and will never please everyone. They didn't bother me one whit.
Did I mention how absolutely tight the entire effing script was?
Did I mention how often it made me and my friend burst out laughing during the screening?
Did I mention how well and completely these actors in this sharp, knowing production brought this baby home?
The long bursts of searing truth in the dialog keep on coming, and will command your damn attention every single time.
This is my new favorite movie.
