Under The Skin was easily the best film I saw last year and I saw it twice in theatres.

KT

Fell asleep halfway through it last nite still trying to figure out everything going on.

Watching again ATM kinda half, I imagine I'll have to watch it for real a few times maybe.

That's some trippy stuff going on there.

I didn't think it was that bad if you watched it in the right frame of mind.

About like Lucy.

Indeed, very trippy. I think I said Kubrick meets Lynch meets Argento after I first watched it. Certainly not for everyone, but I found it amazing.

Lets Be Cops - 5 / 10

Some decent laughs. Far from the funniest movie but still has some good bits to it. Terrible action movie - it isn't one though and doesn't really try to be. Just don't expect it to be. Enjoyable in a bad movie kind of way but generally missable.

The Purge - 7 / 10

If you can get to the point where "The Purge" is rational/ok/a real thing/basically anything other than the stupidest shit you've ever heard or seen, not a bad movie. The concept is the movie's biggest flaw, but is otherwise put together pretty well. With the exception of the major plot twist near the end (which is cool, predictable, but makes absolutely no sense when motive is included), the characters in the movie seem to portray what The Purge means to them. Neat to see the psychological effects. Shades of Paranormal Activity.

The Purge: Anarchy - 7.1 / 10

Better than The Purge. More developed concept and some very cool scenes. But by the end of this one, I more or less had the feeling that I wanted it to be over already. I don't see much of a future for this franchise though. They should have taken it in a different direction.

The Shining - 8 / 10

Holds up. For a movie made 25 years ago, it's pretty impressive, except for the wife. She is just awful. Due for a solid remake though. I'd pay to see that. The kid is freaking amazing in this one though. Puts Anakin Skywalker to shame in a serious way.

Fury - 51 / 10

Not a typo. In my top 5 movies ever seen. See it in theatres if you still can, or plug in the sub and turn the volume waaaay up. Jaw dropping.

I have to disagree on Under the Skin. It wasn't anything new. Sure, it was different than what is being released these days, but it was trying to hard to be obscure and 70's Kubric. It wasn't bad, but it was not groundbreaking in any way.

Transcendence
1/10
1 Because of Johnny Depp.

What an awful movie. Made for a series of sequels. Horrible.
AAAAAAAAAAH !! D:
Government working with terrorists to destroy a threat that is not there.
The only scientists that understand it are afraid of it and must destroy it.

There is one thing though, love knows no barriers. If those barriers may be technological or just being dead.
If you like movies about AI, a movie made decades ago is a good one. It is called : "Demon Seed".

It had possibly the dumbest twist ending ever.

AI: "I'm going to act like a psychopath and make everyone think I'm the enemy but in the end after I get everyone to destroy me, I'm going to explain how all of my actions were for the good of the planet and all of mankind.

I'll keep it short and sweet. Movies suck lately, so I've watched a few not so mainstream movies lately (exception of the first on the list of course)

Saint Vincent (2014) w/ Bill Murray: I really liked this because it wasn't necessarily a straight up comedy movie. There was plenty of that, but it had a more serious note to it also. 8.5/10

November Man (2014) w/ Pierce Bronson: Lower budget james bond type movie. I enjoyed it considering some of the trash thats come out lately. 8/10

The Hunter (2012) w/ Willem Dafoe: A bit predictable at times, but overall a good flick to watch with a little bit of everything except comedy. 7.5/10

Predestination (2014) w/ Ethan Hawke: Completely f**** up movie, but in a good way. Its a time travel movie, so if you get confused easily maybe not the best for you. 7.5/10

A Most Wanted man (2014) Philip Seymour Hoffman: Slow paced thriller, but engaging. Ending has a slight twist to it, but nothing super exciting. 7/10

Ardennes Fury (2014): Low budget shite special effects. 2/10

Late Phases (2014): If you cant make a werewolf look better than that I'm not interested. 2/10

Oh I disagree. The sound design alone makes it stand out, plus it felt almost real with how he used non-actors. Yes, it certainly is an homage to previous works in parts, but on the whole it was unique.

xmen days of future past - 9/10 - really solid xmen flick. didn't realize it had so much of the original cast in there, even if they weren't in it for so long. it was funny watching this movie the day after edge of tomorrow as they have quite a bit of time traveling similarities.

Big Hero 6 - 7/10

This really came off as an Americanized anime in Pixar style rendering rather than animation. The story was super predictable, but it was fun and had some decent voice acting. Sadly, Erlich from Silicon Valley was one of the characters and all I could think about was how many guys he could jerk off in a given amount of time (which, I know the formula and answer to find out...). The GF cried like a baby though. =( If you have kids, it is certainly worth taking them, as it will keep them entertained.

im actually way more skeptical about movies that have such high ratings on sites RT than i am about the movies that have mediocore or low scores.

I had not looked at the RT score until slayer posted it; all of the positive stuff I'd read/heard was from Letterboxd and podcasts which, for the most part, is just normal people and not critics. Of course I still use RT as a very rough gauge; it's rare that a sub-40% RT film is something I love, though to be honest I have not really tracked it.

Big Hero 6 - 9/10

I realize it's not "true anime" and it's been Americanized and Disneyized, but as a movie in and of itself (generally for younger kids), I thought it was superb. Rock solid top to bottom.

Put a skull on Grillo's shirt and it's essentially a Punisher movie :D

I know its not a movie, but...

Book of Mormom @ Princess of Wales in Toronto - 9 / 10

Very very good. I hate that theatre though. But the show itself was great. It's very clearly South Park creators. Pretty solidly funny from start to finish with just one criticism that doesn't make sense unless you've seen it, but its pretty typical of Stone & Parker. In their longer stuff, they lose the middle, insert things just because they're funny instead of contributing to the actual plot. Really in this one it was just one song. It was funny and entertaining though. Worth seeing for sure.

Everything I've heard about the Book of Mormon has been so extremely positive. I might have to catch it when it comes back through Chicago. I am not a huge fan of South Park anymore, but this seems to be worth the tickets.

9/10 R.I.P.D.

I had a great time watching R.I.P.D. I had a lot of laughs.
Jeff Bridges is fantastic in this movie portraying the character with his weird facial expressions and old way views. Ryan Reynolds is being his usual funny self.
It is an easy fantasy comedy with a lot of special effects.
I had some great laughs, especially about the disguises and the weapons they carry. I am not going to give away anything. If you are curious, please go watch the movie.

I liked it, but most give it a thumbs down since it's just a remade Men in Black...it even uses the CGI models from it.

Yeah, to be honest the CGI ghosts are a bit cartoonish/dated perhaps compared to state of the art CGI but personally i have no objection against it. Funny thing is i never really liked MIB. I really had to laugh though, about the disguise for Reynolds character and the weapon he is holding. Imaging seeing that on the street. :D

If we're doing plays I could add a ton. Small local theater is perhaps my favorite form of entertainment after consensual heterosexual sex. Live theater, like live music, rocks in a way recorded performances simply can't match.

Of course, any reviews I posted would be all but useless since they would be uber-local. Well, fuck you, I'm posting one anyway, from perhaps from my favorite acting troupe, The Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium.

The IRC: We Bring Good Nothingness to Life.

Just saw this three play set from them last night. As well as being inexpensive, intimate (we were, no exaggeration, less than 3 feet from the stage -- my coat got run over by one of the actors), outrageously funny, and incredibly well-written and acted, it contained a cornucopia of instructive life skills, among them:
