pacific rim - 9/10 - i thought this movie was flat out BADASS. i really had no expectations of it other than that it was about big ass monsters that reminded me of that neo geo fighting game, kind of monsters. it actually had a somewhat decent story as well, and it had some really great effects. it just reminded me of being a kid with action figures as well. oh, and i have to say, this movie was one of the BEST SOUNDTRACKS i've ever heard in a movie. the bass in this movie is INCREDIBLE as is the overall sound in general. if you have a nice sound system this one will rock the house. i might purchase the 3d version just to see it in 3d next time, but also to own so i can use it as my new demo disc.

The best part about the 3D version are the fish in the beginning. They swim around in the negative space, so it's like they're right in your living room!

Anyway, Ralph Potts at AVS Forum gave Pacific Rim a very good review for its Blu-Ray quality (Video: 100, Audio: 100) -- including the 3D (90).

Make sure to get the Jeremy Renner H&G movie since there is a "mockbuster" H&G too.

Are you referring to this movie or this movie? Neither of them seem to be the mock movies like the latest one, The Starving Games.

Anyway, as for Hansel & Gretel, there was just something off about it the entire time. Frankly, I blame Gemma in those tight tops for my inability to focus enough to recall my issues. :p

El Topo

Words are an inadequate communication platform for this movie. It is fvcking gross and weird. It is less weird than holy mountain, but more gross. All other comparisons to all other films are useless. People may say "is it as weird as Eraserhead." Eraserhead is a great film, but, it is not bizarre at any level close to approaching the oddness of el Topo.

It is either "the worst piece of filth garbage shit crap", or "genius work of art" depending on who you ask. I'm simply baffled/confused.

If you took all the crazy people in the world, and each one of them muttered some insane sentence. And then you connected all of their sentences together into one big list of sentences. You would come up with a more sane story than this.

It has an awesome thing though. It has a man with no legs who rides on the back of the man with no arms. They form a sort of mutually beneficial hybrid.

El Topo made me feel sick and confused. I can not recommend this to anybody. Those who are interested in it will seek it out on their own. Those who are not, should absolutely avoid it.

House of Cards 9/10 I think this is my new favorite show. It definitely fills the void left by Breaking Bad. I'm on episode 5 or 6, and it just keeps getting better...

White House Down 5.5/10
I went into this movie with very VERY low expectations so that probably helped me not hate it. This movie was much dumber than Olympus has Fallen but that probably helped me just watch it as an action movie. I was too pissed off at how everybody in OHF were such pussies the whole time I was watching it to enjoy it any.

Gravity 8/10

Got out of the house, away from the power outage, and decided to kill some time in the theater. It's quite an intense flick. I'm no scientist, so the fast and loose physics didn't bother me all that much. When one character holds another's leg as if he's getting pulled by Katrina force winds in outer space I did chuckle a bit. There are many alternate ways of handling the situation the film makers wanted to portray, but I guess none of them had the desired emotional impact, so they took a risk.

The 3D was very good, the best I've ever seen.

And what of Sandra Bullock? I thought she did a fairly good job in the role. I was tense with her, felt emotions with her, and pretty much experienced everything she did (in the safety of a movie house). Her performance is physically convincing, and I was wrung out by the end of the movie. I thought I was having a bad stinking day, but I must admit: her's put's mine to shame by a tiny bit.

I'm really glad I did see this in the theater. The impact at home wouldn't be nearly as great. If you haven't seen it yet I'd recommend finding a theater that's still showing it in 3d and catching it before it's gone. Most likely you'll be happy you did.

Oz the Great and Powerful 10/10

I had my doubts, but I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel to The Wizard of Oz. I wonder if they will make more, or even a remake of The Wizard of Oz?

The Worlds End
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213663/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
After surviving the wrath of El Topo, I opted to move on to more narrative type films. The Worlds End was an excellent choice I think. The blend of great characters and the chemistry on the screen was fantastic. Nick Frost deserves much credit. Usually Simon Pegg takes the limelight, but, in this film, Frost absolutely dominated.

An objective/straight review would maybe have me leaving a 6 or a 7, but, I'd personally rate it a solid 8 after 1 viewing. Shaun of the dead and Hott Fuzz are better films. I will watch this again.

storyline is pretty simple but the bad guy who was the main character in District 9 is pretty entertaining.

The Hobbit 6.5/10

The Hobbit was the first real book I read as a child, and my aunt bought me a book club membership, so I got the Fellowship of the Ring trilogy also. Absolutely loved them.

The movies however... I don't understand all the hype. I couldn't finish any of the FotR movies, had to fast forward and skip chapters. The Hobbit is better in the beginning, but then degrades quickly.

I always hated the fact there weren't more fantasy movies, and now I hate the fact that these films will shape future fantasy movies.

Watching this film with my housemates later. I hope it's good like you said! :D

EDIT
4/10. Nothing new, same old heroic movie. The movie was to short IMO. Also, I would like a medbank for Christmas please! ;)

I finally got around to Paranormal Activity 4 and I'd actually give it a 6/10. I enjoyed the first 3 and people hated this one. It was more of the same but I didn't really think it got worse, just not as much lore progression as it should have had. Hopefully the next one gets better.

Olympus Has Fallen: 7/10 - OK if you ignore the obvious "America FUCK YEAH" aspect of the movie, I thought it was fun. Lots of cool action scenes. Now, I do think the writers missed out on an awesome opportunity at the end. At the very end
Mike, The President, and the main bad guy are the only ones left alive. Bad guy shoots president, Mike kills bad guy, woohoo go 'Merica. What would have been better is if the bad guy shoots Mike, the President gets free and starts rumbling with the bad guy hand to hand, all over the place ending with at the front door where the President is pummeling the guy and then says "Now get out of my house" and upper cuts the guy so hard he goes flying out the blown out front door of the White House.
How they missed that as the obvious ending is beyond me. They even set it up in the beginning by having the president sparring with Mike in the boxing ring.

Anyone watched 'Pan's Labyrinth'? Is it any good? Is it scary? I love scary horror :D

Best advice I can give is to buy Pan's Labyrinth, this movie is that good and belongs in (most)everyones movie collection.

I wouldn't call it scary but a very well done adult fairytale. The movie ranks up there with the best of the best.

9.5/10 must own

Edit: Let me add that the Blu-ray of this movie is outstanding in PQ. The PQ is 10/10 easily surpassing all the other blu-rays I own. This is the blu-ray that shows the difference between DVD/Blu-ray for those that can't tell.

Last Stand: 6.5/10

I was pleasantly surprised. Not the most original story line but the one liners were generally good and well delivered. Lots of good action to keep you interested. Also another good movie soundtrack. The gun battles are well punctuated and the vocals are very clear

Completely agree. Its no masterpiece script writing but well above average for the giant robots vs giant monsters genre. Its just stupid fun. Who doesn't love bludgeoning monsters with cargo ships?

The visuals are crisp and the fight scenes are very detailed and don't suffer from the overly fast/burred/chaotic action sequences of other giant robot movies *cough* transformers *cough*

And the LFE? Holy fuck - it will leave lesser subwoofers sobbing and cowering in the corner with blown out cones and partially melted amps. For those with well provisioned systems you will giggle with glee as your room shakes and rattles. (well, at least I did) The well orchestrated LFE is never uncontrolled or excessively boomy. The movie also manages a well balanced surround experience and the dialogue is clear despite the near constant assault waged on your subwoofer. Its on the shortlist for Best Audio of the Year

It won't do well for those who are looking for good plots, superb acting or intellectual stimulation but as a action movie? 9.5/10

Babel (Iñárritu, 2006) 8.5/10

A favorite of mine, saw it twice in 2007, watched again last night. Not Hollywood, although it has a couple of their stars (Pitt and Blanchett). Leaves you guessing about a few things, what happened to who type of stuff, but so does life! A lot of really amazing cinema that strikes you as reality, not fantasy.

Only thing I got from that movie is that rich, white people always win.

The Man From Nowhere - 8/10
The basic plot has been done a hundred times over: Man has mysterious past. Meets little girl. Little girl gets kidnapped. Kicks major ass trying to save her. It's entertaining. I liked it. Fight scenes are pretty cool.

The new Red Dawn movie is on Netflix. Any takers? I might watch it if I go to bed early (Grey Cup is essentially over which might be a few minutes)

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear - 6.5 / 10

Noah Wylie in a 2004 action - comedy - romance in the Indiana Jones mold. Harmless fun, worth the rental. Trivia: one of the baddies is Kelly Hu, the voice of Visas Marr from KOTOR 2.

Ender's Game - 8/10 - I've read most of the books. I could see why a non-reader would want to rate lower. Character development wasn't fluid, felt rushed even for a near 2-hr long movie. Great A/V and solid acting, even from the kids.

The Purge - 4/10 - The trailer was far more better than the movie itself. I expected more action rather than scenes filled with arguments among characters.

Riddick - 6/10 - Movie was exciting and interesting. Story and scenes were filled with at least some action and/or emotions, and there were no scenes where it was missing.

I don't get it though. Why is it PG-13? I never watch PG-13 horror movies, because I know it's going to be crap. Maybe I'm wrong. I might watch it later tonight though. :ninja:

EDIT - My bad, It's rated 'R' not PG-13 lol. Fine! I watch it! :)

PG-13 these days is more like R of 20 years ago. That being said, it is not a horror movie, but a very artistic dark fairy tale as someone said. It is "horror" from a child's perspective.

Only watching R movies really doesn't mean anything. R today just means they cuss a lot...and maybe more nuditiy :p
