Time for an upgrade for my box. I'm going all out, buying everything except CD drive and floppy drive (who uses those anymore?). Here is what I've come up with so far:

Motherboard
Processor
Ram
Video Card

Firstly, would all this work together taking all things into consideration? If not, what would you replace them with? And should I consider more RAM? And are all power boxes the same, or is there a certain voltage I need to get specifically for this setup?

Well, first of all, you need some sort of optical drive (DVD or CD), unless you already have one you can use.

Second, we need to know you overall budget before we can tell you how to improve the system...

LOL, buying a Socket-A mobo and CPU wouldn't be what a lot of guys around here consider "all-out."

Any reason why you are not considering an A64 Socket 939 platform?

If you're gonna shell out money for an upgrade, at least get current generation technology. At the very least, go with an athlon 64 2800 on a socket 754 mobo.

1. Go A64
2. 9550 Sucks. Get a used 9700 Pro for ~100/ 9500 Pro for ~90/ 9600 XT for ~100
3. It's better to get a 512 stick so you can later get 1 GB and run in dual channel.

1. i think he should go s754 sempron

2. i agree

3. id get a 512 stick because i could get a 2nd and still run 1t, not because of dual channel (no real performance boost).

What's all this talk about dual channel ram? Neither the board he selected or the suggested socket 754 are capable of dual channel.

Of coarse, this only makes the choice of a single 512 stick even more obvious.

The recommendation for the socket 754 is spot on, but get the Athlon 64, not the Sempron.

***Edit, forgot a couple of things.
What is your current power supply and hard drive? And do you have an ATX case?

Don't know his budget but if he's going best bang for the buck. Get a Socket 754 based Sempron CPU. There is no reason to get the A64 except for the fact that you might want to run something like video encoding or 3D rendering or something that can benefit by going to a 64 bit OS. If he's like the average user then he will make do with 32 bit computing for years to come and thus, the cheaper price of the Sempron makes it the way to go.

ya, 754 doesnt have dual channel. if your gonna spend the lil money as you stated get some used system from the FS/T part of this forum, you can get something way better used for around 450-500

My budget is $800, yes I have an ATX case, no I don't have any particular reason for that particular socket type except for that it matched the CPU (hence why I asked here if there was something better I should get). I game alot, and thats mainly what I want out of this, but when it comes time to editing the video footage of my gaming, or when I feel like messing with 3D rendering programs, I'd like for it to run smoothly still. Oh and yes, I have a DVD-RW already, and it works fine. Oh, yes, and a hard-drive (IDE, are all motherboards capable of handling this?)

And thank you for the responses so far. =D

So you need a new monitor, keyboard, mouse? You said you are going all out and you already have DVD drive, floppy and HDD.

If you're a gamer, go for A64.

So, $800...

you don't need optical drives, hard drives,...

What else do you have? case? good powersupply? monitor? keyboard mouse?

You'd probably going to want a new powersupply if you don't have a nice one already.
For $800 on CPU/motherboard/powersupply/ram/vid you could get:

A64 3200+ 939
Chaintech NF4
X800XL
1 gig corsair
Seasonic 380watt

EDIT: $750 before shipping.
So, these are the only parts you need then?

Meh. A 380W Seasonic S12 is more than he needs ATM anyway, so he's got headroom.

My motherboard died last night and I just order an A64 system.

I found 2x512mb pc3200 kingmax brand for $73 after rebate :)

I'm keeping my radeon 9800pro so I went with the Soltek 939 as I'm not overclocking and don't need a lot of features

also, the 3200+ I linked to above.

Ordered a seasonic 430watt for my own system (5 hard drives so I wanted some extra power)
