Novocaine wasn't kicking in at the dentist today. Anyone else ever have this?

yeah, last time i had to get a filling, i was just chillin after three shots, and they kept trying to go at it and i kept telling them i was in extreme pain. The assistant said, "Ok, we are going to give you a shot of this, Its stronger than novacaine." that did the trick, but i wasn't numb till i had been in the chair for over an hour and a half. When i get my wisdom teeth out, i am definitely going to have them gas the daylights out of me. Caffine has no effect on me, as does most medicine, so i have a habit of frustrating dentists.

I didn't even know I could GET a novicaine shot until I was 16! My dentist used to drill all my cavities with no anesthetic at all and I've got a lot of cavities, let me tell you. I remember talking to my mom about how I had another cavity and I was dreading going to get it filled because the drilling hurts so bad. She's like "Really? I get a shot of novicaine when I'm getting work done. Can't feel a thing!' My mouth literally hit the floor. Next time I went, I'm like dude, give me some novicaine. You been torturing me all these years. Stuff works great, except it hurts like heck for a second when he hits the nerve with the needle to inject the stuff. My dentist knows how to use the stuff though. It numbs me up and usually 2 hours after I'm out of the office, it has completely worn off.

You get over the pain real fast. You just gotta slip away a bit.

Kinda like a "hurts so bad it doesn't hurt" sort of thing.

This is all about 25% of the reason I don't want to get my wisdom teeth out any time soon.

I had IV sedation when I got my wisdom teeth out, so it was like a drug-induced 2 hour nap. The only downside was that I forgot to breathe a couple times... I was just aware of a monitor going "beeeeeeeeep" like a flat-line heart monitor, and the dentist said "I need you to go ahead and take a breath for us."

I've had it happen to me several times. Just drill without it - it really isn't too bad. Sure, it sucks when they hit a nerve but it'll pass.

Yes! IV sedation is amazing. I also had it when my wisdom teeth were removed. You just sorta fall asleep and when you wake up he's done and cleaned up. My oral surgeon was really really professional, there was little swelling and no discoloration after the surgery.

They will put you under to remove your wisdom teeth, if you so desire.
