Please help re setting up a home network with a desktop Athlon 1 Ghz PC ( Win 98 SE and ASUS AV7 mobo ), an ADSL 750 kbps connection to the Internet , and an Windows XP laptop with WIFI .

1. Is one Ethernet NIC on the desktop connected Ethernet to the router , and the WIFI on the laptop connected to the router via WIFI , sufficient to enable simultaneous access of the desktop to the Internet and , file/printer access from the laptop to the desktop ?
2. The walls of this house are pretty thick and massive . Might there be any problem for the laptop tom access the WIFI on the router from different rooms or floors ? ( 3 floors - router on second floor ) .
3. Any specific NIC or router to be recommended for this setup ?

Thanks for any help .

1. Yes.
2. Yes, you might have problems. Only way to find out is to set it up, and walk around watching the signal meter.
3. Not from me. G/L.,

I concur with Woodie.

1) Would work fine
2) 3 story house? You'll probably have problems if the router is on floor 1 and the laptop is on floor 3. I'd try locating the router somewhere central in the house. Might have to run a longer cable to the desktop or get a wireless card for that too. Wireless routers always work better when somewhat centralized to the area you want to cover. Horizontal range is normally fine (100+ feet) but vertical range varies. Will have to test it out and see wher eyou get good signal or not
3) Not really. I use NetGear wireless. Lots of people use LinkSys. Generally you get what you pay for...
