Hi,

I need to do a quick presentation on Novell, but the problem is that I don't know very much about it. Do any of you guys know any good information about Novell, such as how does it compare to Windows servers or Unix based servers?

thanks for the info,
pitupepito

What do you need to know? I have some information on Novell. 🙂

I currently run about 100 servers that are a mix of Netware 5.1 and Netware 6.
Novell isnt just an NOS, they also offer a ton of other products like I chain, SSO, Bordermanager, E-Directory and my new personal favorite..ZenWorks for Servers/Desktops.

Ahh, yes BM and ZEN are life safers. I love the ability to have user IDs in proxy logs rather than IP addresses that have to be tracked down. ZEN is just the greatest. I create an application object for each app and when a PC has the be reimaged I don't even have to think about that app. I also use ZEN policies for printer installation and imaging. I have less techincal people helping support PCs and it helps if they don't have to tyhink about what printer to install or what image to use when reimaging. I also use ZEN policies to lock down workstations.

You should be able to find all the info you need and product comparisons on Novell's website.

Some of the people that started Novell were products of an education in Utah at BYU. That area has a lot of computer companies like Jazz Drives.

Novell Uses Plug-Ins or loadable modules. It also supports things that can be configured as objects. For an example of how this works consider a firewall. You can make a fire wall object. All computers access the internet through this object. Then you can chage the IP address of the object without updating all the computers.

Novells biggest complaint is that Microsoft tries to rewrite its operating system making it hard to compete. Microsoft has purposely tried to write its operating system so it makes other people's products such as servers have a hard time working with Windows. On the other hand, you can use Novell as a network and use Microsoft Servers such as NT, or with Linux servers.

Novell also has some excellent utilities for designing the network with tree design diagrams that make it visually easy to manage.

One good point to bring up on the Microsoft isue is guess who went to a "tree" style architecture? Thats right Microsoft!
Novell has been and still is the Directory NOS, period...Windows AD just doesnt compare.

I cant wait to finally get our E-directory and AD up and running togethor...next item is a portal!

Zen rules reicherb!
Nothign better than sending a desktop a new image at night, then daisy chaing their app installs on top of that.
They come in at 8:00am and the system is brand new and running just like they got it when it was new!

Man i love that!
