Novell .. wtf?

I'm at school and they use Novell .. I used to be able to use ICQ and AIM, etc, and I can no longer download things with DAP either .. IE DLs really slowly (0.5K/s).

What should I check out? I have full access to my machine (😉).

Novell has nothing to do with it. Neither does your machine. It has to do with the backend connection. If they removed ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, Napster, etc. access by blocking the ports then your SOL. Also, they can restrict the amount of bandwith that is available by downloads on ports such as port 80 i.e. IE 🙂.

Your best bet: Talk to your school admin or backbone expert to see what is the deal and where the pipe is being limited.

PS There is no way you can change this unless you are at the router, switch, firewall this has been restricted at, and even then you have to have sufficent rights to do this.

You can redirect AIM to use another port if you are using behind a firewall with the default port closed. This is what we did where I intern at.

Novell might have something to do with it if the school installed BorderManager. Does your IE use any proxy settings?
