I know mostly Novell and I'm looking to learn more about MS but first I wanted to know what are the equivalent features/programs of both. This way I will have something to compare against. I'm mostly looking at Novell Netware 6 and MS Server 2K Advance if that helps in the comparison.

Server OS
Netware -> Server 2K, 2K3, etc.

Directory
NDS, eDirectory -> NT Domains, Active Directory

Print
NDPS -> Network printing, print sharing

Push Programs, Patches, etc
*ZenWorks - Active directory has software installation capabilities. Many companies also purchase systems management server or SMS For patches, we use software update services or SUS

Cluster
*Novell Cluster Service(NCS) -> microsoft cluster services

Login Method
Novell Client -> Client for microsoft networks

Management
ConsoleOne -> microsoft management console, MMC
RemoteManager -> none seen for win2k, win2k3 may be different...havent looked at that yet.
iManager -> see above answer
win2k server allows the admin to logon to terminal services. its equivalent to rconsole/rconsolej for netware.

Others

email & collaboration
groupwise -> exchange server

firewall, proxies, web cache
bordermanager -V ISA server

web servers
Novell Enterprise Web Server, i think novell is phasing out this server. Apache has been ported over to netware and runs right next to enterprise web server so you can choose which server u want. Netware also now comes with perl/php support-> IIS

remote file access
iFolder -> offline files

SQL
postgesql and mysql run on netware -> SQL Server

there are more products but that all i can think of right now. You're wrong about novell cluster services...every copy of netware 6 and now 6.5 shipped includes a license for a 2 server cluster. if you need more servers, up to 32 then you need to purchase an upgraded cluster license from novell. With MS, clustering is not available in win2k server, you need to buy into advanced server.

Also I believe Novell is switching from the NetWare core to Linux (especially now that they've bought SuSe) in the long term, things like eDirectory already run on it so all they really have to do is port things like the NCP fileserver or just drop NCP and switch to CIFS for good.

Just wanted to point out that SMS is more than patch management. SMS is an entire desktop/server management suite that includes hardware inventory, software inventory, software metering, software compliance, software installation, patching, and remote control. Those are the majority of the items it covers.

Thanks so much for the help. Now that I know what MS calls that programs/applications that I'm familiar with in Novell, I will have a better understanding now.

Thanks a lot
