Can anyone tell me how I would go about starting the setup process of a novell server. I have the CD's but in anymachine I try them in it appears it will start up fine and prompts me for the language selection. After I select my language it locks up and will not do anything. I left the machine go for 24 hours to see if anything would happen, but it didn't. What partitions do I need and can I use fdisk to make them? Also how would I go about starting the setup process. I thihk the actual problem is with the CD Rom driver. I am using a dos boot disk that will load a cd rom driver. Is there a way to make an actual novell boot disk to load the cd rom dirvers?

Moonark there should be a set of Novell Boot Disks on the CD, But not 100%. I think its makes 4 floppies. If you have troubles let me know and I'll look up the link. I got them from Comaq's site. I downloaded the Novell 5.0 bootdisk and used them and had NO problems installing from the CD after that.

I have had the same problem that you are having. Seems that the installer sucks and does not work properly. If you go into the IBM folder, and keep following the path, you will find an exe that is called menu.exe, I think. Type the name of the exe and then one of the dat files. I will look over the CD again and give you the accurate file names tomorrow.

Everything installs off the CD install script. But the problem you are having is very likely related to your DOS version or your real-mode CD-ROM driver. Describe plz.

The best thing to do is install the caldera dos that comes on the license disk. Make a 100MB DOS partition on the HDD and put your startup files there.

The path is {your CD ROM drive}:\INSTALL\IBM\DOS\XXX\_\select.exe main.dat

If you type in the path above, you will launch the installation wizard.

Let me know if you have any further problems.

I would not use the driver off of the license disk. I would use a Windows 98 boot disk and use the ATAPI drivers from that disk.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

here is another question... How should I set up my partitions? Are there any special requirements in doing so?

1. NWCDEX.EXE is just like MSCDEX.EXE. You still need your real-mode driver from your vendor.

2. 100MB DOS partition (C: drive), leave the rest unpartitioned for the install. You will be prompted during the install to create a sys volume. If you are running printers from your server, you should also create a small volume for your queues. For a small installation, the SYS volume is all you need.

4.11 is a great OS. As a consulting CNE, I installed it hundreds of times. Make sure you get the latest service pack from support.novell.com.

OK I finally go the install to start :):):) but I keep getting a message that some of the install files needed cannot be found or installed. Is there anyway to get around this?

What does your config.sys look like? Post it plz. And you can also Alt-Esc over to the console while the files are transferring, so you can get more explicit details on your errors. I'm glad you're making progress with this.

4.11 doesn't use syscon. Try nwadmin (nwadmn32 if you have applied the service pack, which you need to do before anything else). You are in a tree environment now -- not the bindery.

Can I administer the Novell Server through windows? Is there a program on the disk in which I can have a GUI to administer it?

Yes, nwadmin or nwadmn32. It runs from a windows workstation. That is the ONLY way to adminster a 4.11 tree. I believe it is in sys:\public, but it's been a while! If you want to do something on the server, you need to get the service pack and download servman.nlm. Pretty nice server config utility. But it only allows you to administer the server -- no directory services stuff.

To run nwadmin or nwadmin32 on my windows machine do I have to do something to the server to get it to work correctly. Also can I add users and manage security from nwadmin? If something is needed on the server how would I go about installing it? Also how do I get to the various SYS: directories. I am not the familiar with Novell, but I need to install it :(. Do any of you know some of the commands for the console?

<< To run nwadmin or nwadmin32 on my windows machine do I have to do something to the server to get it to work correctly. >>

NO, Just make a shortcut on your desktop for NWAdmin from the server or you can install NWAdmin onto your workstation it might run alittle faster this way.

<< Also can I add users and manage security from nwadmin? >>

YES, You can pretty much control EVERYTHING through NWAdmin!

<< If something is needed on the server how would I go about installing it? >>

Not 100% sure on this, But I think the Service Packs have to be installed from the server end.

<< Also how do I get to the various SYS: directories. >>

Not sure what you mean here. You have to create a SYS Volume when install Novell onto a server. Usually it makes one by default I think.

<< Do any of you know some of the commands for the console? >>

When you install Novell you dont use commands you toggle there menu's and just highlight the option you want to view by hitting your enter key from the server end. Unless your talking about NWCONFIG.

Were running 5.0 so this may very some for 4.11. CTR is pretty much the Novell GURU guy here on Anandtech. :) Im still learning myself but help run a Novell environment at work.

Good Luck!

Congrats buckmaster! Glad to hear it.

At the server console enter 'secure console'
I believe that will do it. You will be prompted to enter a password as I recall. That password and the admin password (or old supervisor password if you upgraded from 3.x) will unlock it.

At the system console at the server type "LOAD SCRSAVER" and you can add a password.

Try copying the Win32 directory from the server to your C: drive. Then try to run NWAdmin from there. But something doesnt seem right if you cant run the shortcut from the server.

Also it helps to have the newest client installed on the workstation. You can D/L it from Novells site.

Grin, CTR you just beat me to the reply. :)

Your Windows client will need the Novell Netware client software installed. If you are using the Microsoft implementation, you will not be able to access your tree correctly. Goto http://support.novell.com and download the latest client software for your OS. Second, make sure that you do have the latest SP installed on your 4.11 server; SP8 is the latest for 4.11.
