My company uses Novell and would like me to become Novell certified. Anyone know which certfication would be best, and if I should take classes or buy a book, and which books should I buy. Thanks.
I'm not Novell certified, but I work with a few people that are.
I believe CNA is the equivilent to a MCP, probaby a little 'higher' and a CNE is about he same as a MCSE. The people I know all took classes before the tests, and I believe its' a good idea becaues it sounds like a lot of the test isn't necessarily what's the best way to do things but rather how Novell thinks is the best way to do things.

Same thing for the MCSE tests. If you have a lot of experience with Netware, I'd grab the study guides and then try the tests. (don't know which ones are best, however) I took a couple of Netware classes a few years back and while they were *much* better than the Microsoft classes (content, teaching real-life scenarios, etc.), they weren't teaching me anything (I had 6+ years Netware experience going in) so I just took the tests.
I used to work for Novell doing lab setups and even have Novell's $1500 training kit (which they gave me), but I never bothered to take the tests. If you just need the certification to make your superiors happy, I would recommend just getting the CNA because that only requires you to take and pass one test. The CNE is considerably more involved and basically requires you to learn a lot of things that you will never use in the workplace. I also recommend you do the Novell training specifically for the test because I know several people who did take the test and actually missed questions (particularly install questions) because the test simulator isn't exactly like the real thing and some shortcuts people use won't work.
i cant really find anyplace locally offering the actual training, so i was going to get a book and setup a test server. i'll be doing the CNA for netware 5.1.
You should probably find out what certification level your company wants. CNA is really nothing more than day-to-day administration stuff - setting up accounts, resetting passwords, etc. It doesn't much go into building a server, troubleshooting problems, synchronization, in-depth Active Directory stuff, etc.
It never hurt to have certs under your belt, and it is even better when the company is paying for it. Clients & bosses love to be impressed by papers so give it to them & ask for a raise. Personally I feel them tests are waste of time, because they are all word games that you have to play by their moronic rules. But, why not take advantage of it when the morons that pay the bill eat it right up!

I can see you will go far in your career. Keep in mind that we "morons" got to be your boss by knowing better. Not in technical matters but more importantly in matters of tact and knowledge.
That is my personal feeling, because I have known many Paper MCSE that couldn't configure a network if their life is depend on it. And, I know many capable people that can program & admin circles around these so call MCSE that don?t own a MCSE/CNE/CCNA/A+/Network+.
