Novell 5 Question??

i am the head CAD Tech at my company which somehow translates to "you know all there is about computers". i know enough to get though the day but i know jack about novell 5 which is what we are running on our server. currently we are running 1 set of mirrored disks on our server under what ever the default volume is. can i add another set of mirrored disks to the current volume? if so, how? if ya need more info, just ask.

Is it NetWare software mirroring or hardware RAID mirroring? Do you mean the SYS volume?

as far as i am aware, its hardware raid. after checking, the volume name is "sys". so, yes to answer your question.

actually, i would like to add more storage space to the current volume but i need it to stay mirrored. so i thought that i could solve this by adding a second set of drives. my whole goal is that when the server is accessed from the network, there will only be one drive (windows) or volume to chose from. we use the server as data storage and print server. and the software is set up on the workstations (win 2000, sp 2) and set to access the server through certian drive letters. so to add a second volume, which i believe you would have to add a drive letter on the workstations, would be a pain in the butt to say the least b/c of our directory structure and what not. does that make any sense at all?? if not just call me a pin head and i'll try again. thanks again.

It's generally a bad idea to use the SYS volume for storage because it's the OS volume and filling it up would be bad, but since you're already there changing would probably be painfull.

Since I have no idea how flexible the hardware RAID you have is, I'll assume it's not =)

What you can do is put in the new drives and mirror them in hardware. Then create a new NetWare partition on the logical drive. Then you can extend the SYS volume by adding a segment from the new partition you just created. It's ugly, but it should work.

What would be best, would be to move all the data off of the SYS volume. Since the print jobs go there you probably want to have it be no smaller than 4G. And create a seperate volume for the data.

well its a compaq server, so i'll agree with you on the "flexible" part. as for the rest, i'll see what i can do. i am not so worried about the hardware as i am about making the whole thing just "work". i am really not supposed to work on the server b/c of warranty issues but from you've told me, i can see that it IS possible. so now i can talk to the tech-guys that we have a contract with (this is the warrenty issue i mentioned) on the server and tell them what we want to do. they told me that it wasn't possible b/c they really didn't want to do it. they are like that about a lot of stuff in the office.
