Noticing this more and more, blowing a light/sign by pretending to turn right?!?!

I don't get this, it's not like a cop is going to give them a free pass on it and at a 4 way intersection they more than likely have now ran two stop signs.

To describe it further, person flies up to a red light/stop sign then immediately whips to the right like they are going to turn, but then proceeds to head straight across the intersection (usually driving along the crosswalk)...

WTF.

Another thing people are doing at 2 lane 4 way stops is to pull into the oncoming lane as they approach, forcing anyone stopping before them to wait for them to go first.
 
Most assuredly illegal and guilty of running a red light. Once you start the right turn you are committed to complete it.
 
I remember this one pickup truck try and pull that shit on me at a red light. As the light turned green he goes straight and tries to pass me. My car is no slouch so I punch it when I see this and easily over take him. His dumbass had to slow down and get back in behind me.
 
I saw a guy do this recently and get pulled over because of it...hell I'm pretty sure he saw the cop sitting there at the light but he did it anyways, instant lights and sirens and pulled over
 
Never seen this but as a kid I did regularly a modification of it. I'd take the right and then drive maybe 10 car lengths then U turn and then take a right at the green. I just fvcking hate traffic and waiting, I am not surprised people do this. They will be dinged, though by popo.

That may excite some people...

People do this all the time at a light near my parents house. I would say every time I go visit them, I see someone pull this maneuver.
 
It's along the same lines that I see bicyclists blow the sign by moving over into the cross walk. Had one do that in front of me while I was turning left in an intersection a couple weeks back.

Just moving your vehicle to the side does not change the maneuver you are trying to do!

If you do the "right-u-right" maneuver you could be dinged for not stopping for a red light as well as an illegal U turn. At which point, you're better off just blowing the red.
 
You have to stop to turn right on red anyway, so they will have blown the red light twice won't they?

Very few people seem to stop to make the right on red. Mostly they just blow through.
 
This only works if there's no cross traffic though. Otherwise they can't make the U-turn.

There are occasions where you will have to do this. I sat at a red traffic light for 10 minutes once waiting for it to change. That's when I realize the friggin light was either locked up or the pavement sensor pad was busted and it was never going to turn green. I had to make the right on red, then U turn, so that I could legally go down the cross street to the left. Only other choice would be to sit there at the red until somebody came to fix it? Yeah right.

I've always wondered how long do you need to sit at a light before you can assume it's not working? Conceivably you could be stuck at a "no right turn on red" indefinitely. I've wondered this because I've sat at lights for three minutes waiting for them to change and not seen any other cars in sight.

Heh chances are if your city/county doesn't have the funding for an actuated signal, you probably don't have red-light cameras either. *shrug*

Three minutes is ridiculous though, that's almost 2+ full cycles.

I think they had a bad wire and kept moving it around and stuff. It took about a year and a half before this particular light completely operated correctly. There was always exactly one thing that didn't work right.
 
There is also some law in CA (maybe elsewhere too) about not 'evading traffic control" or something like that. They use it to ticket people doing the gas-station maneuver or things like that.

I got a ticket for merging left in a "right-turn only" lane, so I'm not surprised by this. That was back in August 2009. Tough economy, higher quotas for the LEO's *shrug*. It's my only ticket since my speeding ticket in 2003, so I'm not that annoyed. But it was like - seriously?!
 
It's always been illegal to bypass a traffic control device as far as I know.

Pretty common municipal code.

It is unlawful for any person to ride, drive or propel any vehicle over, across or through any public or private property to avoid having to obey traffic control signals or any other official traffic-control device or signs, unless directed to do so by a police officer or other authorized person.

how much time does that really save you vs the risk of hitting a pedestrian?

Most that sail through a business/gas station do so at very unreasonable speed.

I like to speed, but I don't do it where people would be walking.
 
I've done it a few times, but only at lights I know take a long time and in the middle of the night when there's no traffic.

There's a couple lights where I live that only switch when you're on the sensor. If you've waited a bit you know it hasn't pick up your car. If I have a passenger I get them to hit the crosswalk button, otherwise I pull the right turn Uey.

AFAIK there is nothing wrong with stopping, making the right turn and going to the next turn around.
