So I want to move out of where I am currently. Today seems like a good day to give notice along with rent for August.

My question is: if I give 30 days notice, am I required to move, or can I pay for rent for September on the 1st and continue to stay? Should I give notice at some point that I would like to continue to pay rent?

<edit>does this mean that if I do not give notice until say 8/15 that I will have to pay the entire amount of rent for September even if I am to move out around 9/14?</edit>

I thought the point of giving notice was so the landlord could find a new tenant? It wouldn't work all that well if you changed your mind after 3 weeks.

True. But will I be able to hold an apartment for upto 30 days before I start paying rent there?

Depends on if the manager of the complex re-rents your unit. If not they will most likely let you stay longer. If they do re-rent your unit expect to GTFO on day 30, and out means completely moved out with the unit cleaned.

Ok. I guess I should look around for another apartment then. I am editing the OP for another question...

you're in CA, you can stay there without paying for like 3 months before the cops force you out.
