noticable difference between these two processors?

is there a noticable difference between 1.40 GHz Pentium® M Processor (centrino) and a 1.30 Ghz PIII mobile when it comes to tasks like word processing, interntet, email, and dvds?

i have a 1.4 ghz centrino

this chip has 1 meg L2 and it flies!!!

it's comparable to a desktop 2.2 ghz p4

as for the p3 1.3 ghz... i have no idea! 🙂

word processing, interntet, email, and dvds

you probably won't notice the difference for those kinda tasks
but the centrino is faster in most everything

shim, what kind of lappy do you have?

My guess is probably not. How much price diff are we talking about here?

I have an IBM t41 with the 1.4GHz Centrino... while the CPU is blazzzing fast, I think the bottleneck is the 5400rpm hd...

price is identical, the PIII is lighter with a 12 inch screen. the Centrino is heavier with a 14 inch display

For word, IE and email, you won't notice any difference. DVDs however might be a difference story.

I have a P3 600 laptop, playing DVDs on it is painfully slow and the mouse cursor skips across the screen like a P1 loading a webpage with heavy content. I hear the centrinos are very fast mobile CPUs, for DVD playing there might be a difference in performance. Not in the other everyday things though.

I'm not really sure how fast the P3 1.3 mobile is, but I don't believe the performance is double of a P3 600. If the price is identical it would make sense to get the Centrino with the added bonus of the 14" display. My notebook has a 12" display which limits me to 800x600 only. It's frustrating when I'm viewing webpages and have to scroll down constantly and move to the right when reading articles. Why would you even consider the P3 1.3 anyway? For the light weight?

yup, the PIII weights less. i believe both have a resolution of 1280*768...

Well, for the same price, Centrino is what I would go for. The 12" screen on my lappy will allow me to select 1280x1024, but it doesn't fit on the 12" LCD... might just be S3 Savage's crappy drivers. Also even if they both support 1280x768, the larger screen would still be better. How much of a weight difference are we talking about here? Mine's a 3.6 kg tank but I still haul it around without trouble. Frankly 2-3 kg notebooks aren't a burden at all. How slim it is would be what I'd be looking for.

i dont care about slimmess

the 14 inch screen is 4.9-5.3 pounds
the 12 inch is 3.6-4 pounds

Well these are the factors which I put to u taking into account your mentioned needs.

P3 1.3ghz Mobile 12" TFT:

Pro. Just fine for IE, word and outlook express / webmail. Lighter and easier for moving around.
Con. Small screen. Less futureproof.

P4 1.4ghz Centrino 14" TFT:
Pro: Noticable difference for DVD playback (while performing other funtions) and viewing webpages with heavy content (e.g. flash, multimedia). Great multitasking abilities with prolonged battery life which the P3 won't match. Will be more futureproof if your needs in notebooks were to change. Larger screen. Same price as Pentium 3 notebook with smaller screen.
Con. Heavier.

If all your going to do is leave the notebook after hooking it up to the home entertainment system, then the 1.3ghz will be fine for DVDs. Try and perform other tasks with the DVD going or adjusting the scene or fast forwarding, there could be some sluggishness and loading times for the other applications/Windows folder contents.

As far as IE and email goes, that'll all be the same. Maybe slight difference in performance when viewing high multimedia content webpages.

That Centrino at the same price, to me seems to have more pro's than con's. The decision is yours.

Centrino's are a lot faster per megahertz - kind of like an AMD. They take a lot less voltage to run than the 1.4 Mobile. I'd go with the centrino for sure, though they generally are fairly expensive.

Then definitely the Centrino!

i82lazyboy has some very good points.
