Noticable difference between i7 920 C0/C1 and D0!

I just completed a build for my dad, and it's very comparible to my system, except the i7 920 is D0 stepping where mine is C0/C1 stepping.

His cpu idles at 32C where mine idles at 39C, full load at 58C and mine is 67C (these figures are for stock settings)

Also, I'm running a P6T deluxe v1 while he has the regular P6T. Cooler wise, I've got a TRUE 120 and he's got a Prolimatech Megahalems.

We both have the same Antec P182 case.

I know I've heard that the D0's are better, but... wow.. I can't wait to OC this thing for him!

The problem with the cooler D0s is they require a ton of volts (comparatively to their hotter D0 counterparts) to get to your target which in the end makes them just as hot but also more of a risk of faster degradation due to electromigration if the voltage is excessive. (1.5Vcore)

if its for your dad..

swap cpu's.

Dont overclock the C0 or moderately overclock it so its more stable the fast and swap with your dad.

Take the D0 and go spank wild on it on your machine.

Reason i say this is because @ a set speed on both, the C0 will not be any slower nor will u notice any difference in the machine besides heat. However if the machine ever BSOD's your dad will be very upset.

So give the slower more stable machine to your dad, and go spank wild on your machine. Because if YOU BSOD, you probably wont be pissed unless you lost work.

boo! hisssss! 😉

Although Christmas is coming soon, you could hint. I wouldn't swap but maybe he would? I like my "hotter" (but cooler) D0 🙂

Or get a Xeon like Rubycons that will do even better than the D0 and have an OCing contest with him.

I would swap, but I've got my C0 at 3.5 at 1.25vcore, so it's not too bad.

I'm probably going to OC his D0 for him. If he's looking at keeping it stock, I'll make the swap happen ...covertly. haha (I'm just not looking forward to taking out the whole mobo to remove the TRUE).

I've removed the TRUE twice (with the mobo in) without the backplate falling through. Maybe you'll luck out like I have!

I've tried all and have kept this 3520. Some have come close and others seemed to best it but broke down shortly thereafter. I don't stop at clock speed as well - pushing the uncore to the limit to reduce memory latency, etc. This is why my superpi/fritz, etc. scores are beating the guys at 4.6GHz! :Q All on air too! No leaks, no worries.

Currently at 4.4GHz 24/7 load stable. I let it burn 250 times with 12GB linpack and it never missed a beat. :Q

On another note the W3540's I had - all three - were horrible overclockers in comparison. Barely able to do 4.2GHz with 1.35V! My gem does 4.2 with 1.2volts mid 60's linpack with a megahalems.
