I had an old compaq computer laying around and i'm in need of a temporary server. I booted it up once and it worked fine, had xp installed.

I installed ubuntu server on it and got grub error 21 (drive not found) every time and decided just to install server 2003.

I chucked out the old 40gb drive and replaced it with a dvd rom from my old desktop and an 80gb laptop HDD with a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter.

I booted off the dvd, partitioned my drive and setup copied the files. Everything goes fine. After that it wants to reboot the PC but it just hangs after I ignore the "boot from CD" message.

I had the drives set up with the dvd in master and the HDD in slave, I tried booting with just the HDD and it just hangs with a blinking cursor. I've redone the install two times with different IDE configurations adn it's always the same.

i've tried a different 80gb HDD and the same problems.

the only variance is once I had the hard drive in cable select on the second IDE channel with nothing else plugged in and it booted into the install menu but said that the CD was missing and the files must be corrupted. I assume this is because the CD rom was not plugged in. When I plugged the drive back in it just hung again and wouldn't boot.
