Nothing happens :(

Hi all -

This is my first time/post here. I hope someone can help. My computer was working fine, no problems. Then I disconnected everything so I could fix my ex's computer (haha), got that done no problem. I reconnected mine and hit the power button and Nothing! It's like it's not plugged in. But it is. The monitor comes on and the printer boots up from the usb connection to the comp, so it's like there's power somewhere..? I've checked all connections, I even tried replacing the power supply with a brand new one from my ex's computer (ugh) and still it's like the dang thing isn't plugged in. Any ideas? And why would this happen just from having it disconnected over night? I'm at a loss.

Thanks in advance,
Purrrr

Hi there & welcome.

There is usually a red or green light on the motherboard. When you supply power to the system (or think you are 😉), is there a light visible on the motherboard?

Sounds like the I/O switch on the back of your power supply may have been switched off, perhaps by accident.

Just a few quick checks to get the ball rolling. post back with your findings.

Thanks for starting things Meltdown. 😉 There is no light on the motherboard, the led on the front of the tower doesn't come on and believe me, I switched the I/O switch a few times to be sure I knew which was on and which was off. LOL 😱

Could it be the power on switch itself?

Oh yes. The power switch assembly is one of my favourite obscure things to rant about here.

I have rigs with just the plain yellow power switch hanging out of the case, with all of the fancy plastic covers etc. removed. Things can get ugly from time to time, but whatever works... 🙂

Pretty much the only way to check that is if you pry off the plastic front peice of the case. If you do this, be sure not to tug too hard as you can yank the connectors clean off your motherboard.

I'd exhaust all other options before trying this... does the switch seem wonky?

Well stupid thing is, I can't get the friggin' plastic front off the tower. 🙁 Of course I could pry it off my ex's comp (which is the exact same comp as mine), but can't horse it off mine! Wonky? LOL Not really, but not sure. 😕 I just don't get what happened between me unpluggin' everything last night and reconnecting everything this morning for it to all of the sudden decide not to power up.

HELP!! LOL

well let's make a little checklist here.

- plug is in the socket, or power bar
- I/O switch is switched to I on back of the PSU
- power cord is firmly plugged into the PSU
- PSU power connector is firmly plugged into motherboard
- check all connections inside & outside case

hmm. failing all that... with all your components in the same condition as when it was running... i'd be posting here just like you 🙂

best of luck, i hope you can get it figured out. be sure to post back if & when you get it.

Check, check, check, check and yes.

Oh no, don't give up on me Meltdown! LOL

Is there a way to check the power-on button switch thingy? 😕

see if you can access the switch assembly from inside the case.

if not you may have to get jiggy with that front panel. :Q

just don't blame it on me when your case is fubar'd 😛

LOL If I have to, I'll get my ex (who owes me LOL) to horse it off for me. But once I do get jiggy wif it and get it off, how do I check if it's working? I mean it's just a few little wires? Right? LOL I'm not blonde, really! 😉

If you are able to get at it, you will see that underneath lies a much more simple switch. They vary - some are small black cubes with a little grey button protruding from the top. The older style are larger with a longer yellow button which makes a discernable "clicking" noise when pressed. If the button seems to function properly and the wires are all connected to your motherboard properly, you can probably cross that off your list of possible causes.
