Notepad paths & filename error message

The past week or so Notepad has been acting up. I have Win98se. Whenever I double click on a text file ANYWHERE on the system, I get the following error message box with the red X : "Cannot find the file 'C:\..........txt' (or one of its components). Make sure the path & filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."
The text file I double clicked on then opens BEHIND the current window.
How could I have screwed up the paths/filename, etc for notepad? And how can I correct it.
Any help is appreciated.
