I'm trying to fix a notebook computer for a friend. Turns out the hard drive is on it's last legs making clicking noises, so I'm going to need to get a new one. I looked up the specs and it's a Toshiba Satellite 5205-S705 with a 60GB 5400RPM ATA-5 HDD.

Looking on NewEgg, eBay, etc shows many more ATA-6 HDD's for some reason. The only ATA5 on NewEgg is a 20BG model. Are they backwards compatible? My friend said he would like to get a larger HD while he had the chance, so a 20GB is not acceptable.

the difference is basically non-existant
ata100 vs. ata133 won't matter
it should be backwards compatible and work assuming the bios don't have any issues with a particular drive model/make
try to get a drive with the largest buffer/cache, and if available 7200rpm

good luck
