Is it possible to get a notebook with a real, honest-to-gosh video card for at or less than $1000 these days? I've been thinking about getting a notebook, but I want something at least as good as my desktop's Radeon 8500. It seems like most of the notebooks out there are either the bargain basement machines (Celeron, no graphics, etc.) or the ultra power machines that cost $2000.....

Most laptops these days come with intergrated video and sound...I got a Dell Inspiron 5100 with a ATI RADEON Mobility 7500 32MB and it plays the older games on low and medium settings(not very good compared to my desktop gaming reg)...if you want to game with a notebook than your forced spend alot of money

Dell Inspiron 600m, 6000D, 9300 (maybe within your price range with a good deal). IBM R51 (some of them). HP zv6000, ze6000z. Compaq V2000Z, R4000, M2000Z. There really are a lot of systems that can bad had for less than a grand. You just have to look around and many of these models are not sold in retail outlets so you may have to order them online. My personal favorite of the moment is the Compaq V2000Z because its Turion :).

I have a Dell 9300..although you would be hard pressed to get it for less than $1000..although in its base configuration it isnt much more than $1000 with current discounts.

There are actually a decent number of laptops with discrete graphics for around $1000, although it's usually something like the Mobility X300, not anything high-end. You can get the Inspirion 6000 (Pentium M 1.6, 256MB, X300, 3-year on-site) for $800 with the current 40% coupon.

What's difficult is finding something smaller than 15" that has discrete graphics. The ASUS W3V is a 14" widescreen with a Radeon X600, and it's $1900. Sony has a few, but they have worse graphics for the same price.

If you're playing games, you don't want just ANY discrete graphics. And if you're not, you really don't need discrete graphics. Next question? ;)

I got my Dell 600m with dedicated Ati Radeon 9000/64mb for about 900 when they had one of their crazy sales

I believe Inspiron 6000 w/ X300 can be had for $800, maybe $880 or so w/ shipping & taxes.

Maybe the idea from my head? I didn't read your post at all. I just read the OP's post & hit reply, in fact I didn't see your post until now so here's a cookie since you seem to want some credit. :cookie:

the xpress200m chipset isnt really that much behind a x300, so if you get a compaq ze2000z, you should see almost as good performance as a x300. The reason i say this is because there is a office depot sale that ends today that you can get that laptop with a turion64 and base specs for only $375. Then just max out on upgrades with the rest of that $1000 and you'll be set.

My 9300 wif 6800Go was $1063 shipped. Granted I had a 6000 that was decked out, and the 9300 was stripped. I just swapped all the parts and sold the 6000 (Audigy pcmcia card, 1GB, 60GB 7200 rpm drive, etc.)

So if you can live with a CDRW and 40GB drive for a little while, you can get a 9300 wif 6800Go for just over $1000. It's big ass though...
