What models, past or present have the best user-friendly/ergonomic design, and are the most durable (as in they feel solid and don't flex when you pick it up by a corner + has tough screen hinges that let you slam and stays stiff)?

anything OTHER than thinkpad/ibook?

Are you looking to get a laptop? If so, what specs are you looking for? My Dell Inspiron 2200 seems very sturdy and doesn't flex when I pick it up the corner, but my Gateway w/ 15.4" screen seemed to.

Apple's laptops from 2001 onwards have been real champs of ergonomic and user-friendly designs. The corners are completely rounded off, and no ports stick out. The sleep function on the laptops also really works well, as opening the lid usually takes the laptop out of sleep in about one second.

Durability-wise, the iBook is tough - not immune to scratches, but tough. The design helps give a sense of greater quality.

any ibm thinkpad.

they are the only maker give you a full size keyboard with absolutely no learning curve. for the input, they have trackpad and trackpoint for most model. for mine, I only have the trackpoint. I used to go without owning a mouse for 1 year.

well, I heard fujitsu toughbook is really tough. military used to use it, now they use thinkpad.

bump for more suggestions of other notebooks as tough as ibook/thinkpad! (but fairly light too) ibook sounds great except 5lbs is kinda a lot especially for a 12" machine

Ok standard rant #5 here: How can anyone say the thinkpad is ergonomic. No windows key? Function key in the place the control key is on every other keyboard in the world? No widescreen option (for those that need it).

You want to reinvent laptops, fine. But leave the #$#$ keyboard alone. Some of us work on more than one computer......

Rant off.

Interesting that someone referenced the Inspiron 2200 the lowest of the Inspirons. Great deal right now where EVERY upgrade is free.....
