For questions of what sizes/speeds are supported I like www.crucial.com They have a memory advisor tool there where you can type in the make and model of your laptop and it spits out all the options available. Then I take that info and buy off of newegg. As for if you will see a difference it depends on what apps you use, but the difference between 2 and 3GB won't be great.
