I'm having a problem here guys, hopefully you can help.

My mom wants to use a Sony Vaio notebook that we haven't turned on in almost a year, but here's the thing: I cannot get online, at all, wireless.

I can use my ps3, iphone and other notebooks with no problem at all.

So I spend some time, updating all the drivers and XP updates. Still no luck. Even when I look at the wireless status, the signal strength is excellent, it's sending data out but receiving very little, if anything at all.
Even if I connect to my neighbours unsecured network, I still have connection problems.
If I plug the notebook directly into my router, everything works fine.

Items listed under my network connections:
1. Local area connection 4 - network cable unplugged - realtek rtl8139/810x family fast ethernet nic
2. 1394 connection 3 - connected, firewalled - 1394 net adapter
3. wireless network connection 3 - connected, firewalled - lan-express as ieee 802.11g miniPCI adapter

I've even turned off my firewall, still no luck.

You might have tried this, but if not, here's some basic steps that might help determine the problem.

See if you're getting an IP address for your wireless network connection. Right click on wireless network connection 3 and select status. Click on the support tab. See what IP you're getting.

The IP you want to see should look something like 192.168.x.x. If that's the case try some ping tests. Start>Run. Type cmd and hit enter. Ping the default gateway (router). If that's successful, ping 4.2.2.2. If that's successful, ping yahoo.com.

Also, is your wireless router using encryption of any kind? WEP or possibley WPA-PSK?
