Previously my Gateway 305 series laptop was running hot. THe fan would come on and wont go off until like i turn off the machine. That can be hours or days. This would happen when its sitting on a hard wood table. I would assume it would be still be able to cool down.
Finally i got bugged of it and went and bought a Executive Laptop Cooler (compusa branded targus one i think). Anyway for 20 bucks its well worth it.
I havent had one bit of problem in the last 24 hrs. The laptop is running cooler and the fan onboard turns on occasionally.
