What kind of RAM does the Dell Inspiron notebook use? Does it have two memory slots? How hard is it to upgrade the memory myself given how much Dell gouges in memory prices? Thanks for the help.

It really depends on the type on Inspiron. Older models will probably use PC66 SoDIMM SDRAM, but the newer ones use PC100 SoDIMM SDRAM. Dell charges an arm and a leg for RAM, so I'd go with someone like Crucial. They have a nice utility which lets you select your exact computer system and then they tell you which kind of RAM they recommend. Laptop RAM doesn't have various levels of RAM like unbuffered, ECC, etc, so they won't just stick you with their most expensive product. I got an extra 128 MB of RAM early in the year for my Inspiron 8000, and it cost me less than $100, and that was long before the prices dropped like a rock.

Thanks a lot. Crucial.com did the trick. SDRAM PC100 CL=2 Non-parity. Anyone know how hard it is to install in this particular notebook?

Very simple no hassle :)
You could always check Dell support page for documentation if you don't know how to do it.
