Notebook Purchase Advice Please

I don't know too much about notebooks . What I am interested to know is , if buying a middle range quality from one of the better firms ( IBM T 40 ? , Dell ? ) , what is the general chances of it requiring hardware service ? My experience with the regular desktops , these days , is that by selecting better ( and more expensive ) components , the chances of hardware problems diminishes considerably , and in general is very minimal . More specifically , as someone not living in the US , would it be a good idea to purchase a notebook there , on a 1 day flight stopoff in transit ? Or is this a definite no-no ?

anyone disagrees with me that IBM makes the best laptop out there?
go with a T41, if you want to have a laptop that can last. 🙂

actually, t40 might be better. i just got one over a t41 b/c i heard the hard drive protection thing is very senstive and will go stop the HD if u are using the laptop on a bus, plane...anything that is slightly bumpy. also, there are some rumors about it actually destroying the hard drive. either way, both laptops are basically the same. t40 is slightly cheaper now though
