as someone said earlier, most companies call them notebooks to avoid lawsuits where some retard is surfing the net in the buff and gets burned on their goods. Laptops was fine back in the p -> early PIII days, but things aren't the same... notebooks sounds cooler anyways
surprising that so many here refer to them as laptops, when the industry has completely switched to calling them notebooks. check out dell, gateway, ibm, compaq... there's no mention of the word "laptop" anywhere.
