im interested in purchasing a notebook...any advice?

budget is around 1.5k cnd or 1.2k us

cpu: should i get pentium m (735), celeron m, sempron, althon, or turion?

pentium m
- battery
- speed (2mb cache)

celeron m
- slightly slower than pentium m (cache size decreased to 1mb)
- costs less

sempron
- cost

althon
- gaming power
- 64bit (although totally useless...since im not gonna use over 4gigs of ram in a laptop)

turion
- gaming power
- battery

i am gonna use the laptop for gaming (hl2 + cs:s) + programming ( c++(vs .net 2k3) and java (jbuilder 2k5) mostly) and some flash(mx 2k4) works...and some light acad works...

hd: min hd is gonna have to be at least 60-80gigs...and personnally i think 5400rpm is a bit slow..so i want 7200

ram: 512 - 1024 ram. (going for 1024 since ram is pretty cheap rite now)

drive: cdrw/dvd (already have external dvd burner)

battery: i want at least (minimum) 2-3hrs?

vid card: wut should i get? onboard? (cant play games), pcie or agp? x300? something with the hypermemory or turbocache? (vid card too powerful will decrease battery time :S)

wireless: 802.11g

screen size: <15inch is fine (maybe 14.1?) (to conserve battery)

if im getting a pentium m, is it worth spending the extra money to get the pentium m with 533fsb then the one with 400fsb?

or should i just wait like 1.5yrs for dual cores + hybrid hds?

alright, if you want enough power to run games and programming, yet 2-3 hours of battery life, you should go with P-M. 533fsb will probably be better for the future, as it will let you upgrade more, i think.

Getting a 7200 rpm Hd might not be necessary, I think the difference between 5400 and 7200 isn't too much, but thats your choice.

as far as video is concerned, you'll need to get as good of one as you can. The video cards in laptops cannot be upgraded most of the time, so you'll be stuck with whatever you have in there. It's hard to recommend a laptop model or product line because you didnt say anything about size constraints. How heavy can it be? How small do you want it?

Also, i recommend getting the lowest possible amount of ram, (if you are customizing a laptop from dell or hp or something), then going to newegg.com and getting your own ram to stick into the laptop. you'll save between 50 and 200 dollars depending on how much ram you get.

weight and size do not matter

so ur saying 7200 arent that much faster than 5400?

im not buyin from dell or hp...im like getting those asus kits then buy cpu ram myself...also im getting my prices a bit lower than newegg ... maybe 5-15%? depending on the component.
