Notebook HDD

I want a new notebook HDD...I've looked at lots of reviews, and they don't kill your power (maybe a couple of minutes, but not 10+), and produce maybe a degree or two of heat more...What I'm concerned about is noise.
1) Should I spend the extra money and go with the Seagate 7200.1, which is quieter than the same Hitachi 7K100 (100GB versions on both)?
2) How loud is the Hitachi 7K100 (80GB) compared to a 5400RPM HDD?
3) Is ATA-100 compatible with ATA-6?

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, ATA-6 and ATA-100 are the same as far as the consumer is concerned.

Hitachi drives have a feature called Acoustic Management, which you enable thru a bootable CD from Hitachi's website. When enabled too 100%, it is a lot quieter with negligible impact on performance. Still not Seagate quiet, but a lot better.

The Hitachi is the better buy, but the Seagate has a longer warranty and is quieter w/out any intervention.

Noise isn't directly related to RPM speed, but instead to the make of the drive. Hitachi's in general are louder than other brands, with Fujitsu and Seagate being the quietest that I've tested. (And I just finished testing drives from Hitachi, Seagate, Fujitsu, and Toshiba, which covers the gamut of mainstream 2.5" drives.)

So how much more noise is there with the Hitachi and the Seagate. How close to you have to be to actually hear it? I don't want to hear it in a quiet room (I can hear my 5400, but just barely). Is it worth the extra $$ ($230ish for the Hitachi 100GB compared to $299 for the Seagate 100GB)?

EDIT: I just installed AutoPatcher XP on my comp, and my ear had to be on the laptop (on or .25" away) to hear the HDD...

my 2 cents: why do u need a 7200rpm drive in ur notebook? they are overpriced too. sure i like them and all but on the other hand u may not even notice a difference to a 5400rpm drive...depending on what u use ur lappy for of course.
