notebook HDD in external case

I bought a 2.5" 80GB notebook hd over the weekend and put it in a an external USB2.0 enclosure. However, our mail server's mobo is only USB1.1 compliant. I shut down our server yesterday and did a full backup of the mail directory using SyncBack:

Total: 27,548,413,952 bytes (25.6GB)
Time: estimate is 8.5 hours (from 11:07am - 7:31pm)

If my calculations are correct, I did approx 3.0GB per hour or something like 0.8MB/sec. Isn't that slow as molasses??? Will I get improved speeds if I add a PCI USB2.0 card into the server?

The fastest externals are usually Firewire.

Correct! I have 5 of those little guys with 1394. It's a good use for residual 2.5 drives after laptop upgrades. 🙂 I have 2 USB 2 ones- but for sustained data transfer, 1394 wins. I'm looking forward to 1394b @ 800.

You definately will !!! go for it.

even if you factor in the time of going to the store & installing the card & drivers it will still be much much faster. 🙂

DAMNIT! i wish i had been smarter. I already have a spare 1394 card, I shoulda just got an enclosure that supports Firewire as well.

I'll see if I can exchange the case and get one with Firewire!! :|

OK, I came back with a 2.5" 1394 and USB2-compatible external enclosure. But now I need a DC power adaptor b/c the firewire ports aren't powered?? 😕
