Notebook hard drive upgrade?

I am helping a friend upgrade the hard drive on his Compaq Armada laptop. Apparently, he can buy a 9.5mm drive cheaper than a 12.5mm one. My question is: will a 9.5mm work in place of the 12.5mm that's currently in his laptop? Do we need to buy any kind of adapter or mounting bracket?

It will work just fine. The "9.5mm" refers to the height of the drive. It's shorter (thinner) than the 12.5mm drive so it will fit with no problem. All the mounting holes have been standardized for about 4-5 years now, so as long as his notebook is newer than that he'll be fine. There (probably) is a little plastic IDE adaptor on his old drive that you'll have to pull off and put onto the new drive.

Great! That's what I was hoping. I wasn't sure whether or not all the mounting holes would line up, but now I know.

Thanks Ralf.
