after having my notebook for a few years, and reforatting probably 3-4 times, I noticed that my hp notebook is getting really hot, and will sometimes shut itself down.

I usually have to prop a book on the bottom to let the heat move out.....

It actually gets to the pont where the keyboard gets hot, and after I type, my hands feel a bit burned....

any ideas on how to fix this?

this is an hp notebook, 1.4 ghz, and wndows xp

Second that. It's probably dust buildup on the inside of your laptop that prevents the fans from pulling in cool air and prevents HS from dissipating hot air

If that doesn't fix it, one of your fans might be defective. To prevent overheating in general, get one of those "Cool Pads." They run about $30 and are basically a laptop sized piece of plastic that has two fans in it that you plug into your USB port. You sit your notebook on it and it improves air circulation tremendously. I know Best Buy carries 'em and you can find 'em online too, from newegg I know for sure.
