Notebook for video encoding/rendering

Pentium 4 3.2GHz(Prescott) or Pentium-M 2.0 (Dothan)??

This laptop is mainly for video encoding/rendering with 1GB memory and a Radeon 9700. Anyone know how they compare in terms of speed and how much the difference is? Programs used will be Adobe Premiere Pro & After Effects, Sony Vegas 5, and Sony DVD Architect.

I'm leaning towards the Prescott since everything I've read on the internet seems to say that Prescott is faster. But if the Dothan doesn't lag that far behind, I'd rather have the Dothan since it's battery will last much longer, it's cooler, and it's thinner. I'll probably be plugged in most of the time, but a Dothan would come in handy in case I need to travel. But if the Dothan is much slower for the apps I'll be using, then I think I would go with the Prescott.

So what do you think? The laptops I'm looking at are both about $2K.

Prescott or Dothan?

Prescott might be faster when it comes to video rendering ....But thing of the heat generated ..any way you will be leaving the cpu on most time with 100% usage. So it might reduce the life of laptop..i have seen many dead laptop due to excess heat genearation over the years

On the other hand Dothans runs cool and powerfull for your needs

Beware of thermal throttling on the Prescott. If the chip gets to hot (which is very probable in a notebook chasis) it will drop to 1/2 frequency. I would say go for a Dothan system with a 533 MHz FSB.

Dell has the 6000 coming in a few weeks and some other manufacturers will be shipping soon as well.

If you looking dothans with 533 FSB check out all the new models released this jan 19 with 915 chipset.
