I have a Compaq EVO n600c notebook with a 9.5mm height 30GB hard drive. I'd like to upgrade this drive to a 60GB 5400rpm unit if possible, or at least a 40GB 4200rpm unit.

I am under the assumption that as long as I purchase a 9.5mm height drive I should be okay, but for some reason I asked HP about this, here's the response:

Thank you for contacting HP eServices Customer Support!

The largest hard drive that we support in this machine is a 30 GB drive. Anything larger than that we have not tested and can not say with absolute certainty will work. As far as the RPM speed goes, the drives it was sold with were 4200 so I can't say with certainty for that as well.

Nothing like a "non-answer!" It's amazing that they basically have no idea. What do you guys think? Logic tell me it should be fine, but I thought I'd just run it by the forum before diving in.

Thanks

potential gotchas
(a) BIOS support for >32 GB drives (shouldn't be an issue for anything newer than '99-'00)
(b) heat death -- laptops are often designed with very little extra margin, and the bigger/faster drive may run hotter

So their non-answer is correct, especially for (b). They don't know whether your potential replacement will cook itself.
