Notebook doesn't boot

I have an HP Pavillion Notebook. It does not boot. When I have the a/c adapter plugged in the notebook lights up without pressing the power button. The hard drive or exhaust fan does not start up. At this point the notebook is completely frozen. When I remove the ac adapter the lights go off. Now when I press the power button (using battery power now) the lights go on again and show the same characteristics. The lights will stay on for as long as I hold the power buton down. I have tried the reset button and just about every other button on the laptop. Please help.

Leave the adapter in and power it up. Merely plugging in the AC to the laptop doesn't turn it on. You need to press the power button too...

I understand that the adapter has to be plugged in the you must press the power button. The problem as stated earlier is that when I plug the a/c adapter in the unit turns on by itself. Several LED's go on but that is it. There is nothing on the screen and the hard drive does not spin up. The same thing happens when I unplug the a/c adapter and press the power button using the battery power. The lights will stay on as long as I hold the power button. When I release the power button the LED's turn off.

I think some laptops have LED codes (instead of POST beeps). You might want to check HP's website to see if your laptop has that feature.

Try powering it on without the battery in it (remove the battery). If there is a mechanical lid switch (LCD panel sensor), make sure it is not stuck. Otherwise you may be looking at an internal problem. If you had bad memory, it you would get the same result whether plugged in or running off of battery.

I tried to replace the ram module without any luck. That was about my last chance I had. I also tried the other suggestions. Any other suggestions?
