I was once a tech/computer geek but the last few years I've been distracted from computers by marriage, children, work, etc. My wife and I would like to purchase a new laptop and I want to do some research on what my best options are.
My current laptop is a 5 year old Dell Latitude 810, Pentium-M 2ghz, 1 GB ram, 80GB HDD. So needless to say it's time to upgrade.
I've been looking at laptops at BB and Office Depot and recently tried to do some research here at AT. Obviously it sounds like core i3,i5,i7 are the newest breed from Intel. But i'm wondering what the best bang for the buck is. How much better are they than Pentium core 2 Duo?
Can anyone point me to a table that might show the mobile CPU hierarchy? From best to worst? I've heard AMD's come a long way in mobile CPU's and what I've seen at Best BUy they seem to be priced almost as much as the Intel offerings.
I won't be doing any gaming but I would like to have some video editing capabilities and pretty good media options available.
Also any brands to avoid in laptops? I was looking at the Toshiba core i3 with 4GB ddr3, 500GB HDD, and 12-cell 8 hour battery for $699.

EDIT: I did just find this article that breask down the differences in mobile procesors pretty well. Although it doesn't necessarily tell me where an AMD Vision Ultimate stands in comparision to an Intel Core i5 processor.
