Is there some sort of a group consensus on a sub $400 notebook?
Also are there manufacturers to be wary of esp in the cheap range?

Thanks

I think almost all entry level laptops are built by the same few factories in Asia. Of course, they're tricked out with vendor specific firmware and software, and some specific models are better than others, but the main difference between machines with similar hardware specs is the support you get when you have to call 1-800-GET-HELP (in other words, the generic help line).

Until now, my personal favorite has been HP/Compaq because their tech support has always been great when I've needed it regarding my own laptop and those of my friends.

The reason I recommend HP is that they're NOT Gateway. When you call HP, the first thing they try to do is help you. When you call Gateway, the first thing they try to do is sell you something like an extended warranty, even if your machine is currently covered.

I'm concerned because HP just announced that they're getting out of the computer business so I'm afraid I may have to start looking for a new favorite.

Meanwhile, check Staples and Office Depot's sites for their weekly ads. Staples previews the coming week's ads starting on Thursday. OD previews them starting on Friday. Lately, they've been running various models of HP G6 with dual core AMD or Intel CPU's, 2 - 4 GB RAM, 330 -500 GB HD, 15.6" LED screen, wireless n and a webcam for around $325 - $400, depending on the exact configuration.

This week, Staples has this G6-1B50US for $400 after $50 rebate with 4 GB RAM and 500 GB HD.

I've recommended several of these to friends, and everyone who bought one is very happy with their systems.

Here's the consensus: You get what you pay for.

If all you want is a cheap price you will get a crap laptop.
