Notebook battery draining when it shouldn't?

When I use my notebook computer with my car power adapter it drains the battery completely before switching over to the AC power. When I use the regular power adapter in the house it only uses AC power and does not drain the battery unless I unplug the power adapter from it. Any idea why my car power adapter drains the battery first? Thanks for any insights.
 
Know - I have not run into that. But, there is a viable work around. When running in the car off of the adapter, remove the battery from the laptop and it can't drain it. 🙂
