Notebook and audio quality

why is it that notebooks have crappy audio quality? With the current 3D graphics card advances in mobile market, why hasn't any company tried to integrate say an Audigy? The Extigy sucks with USB 1.1's bandwidth. I wish Creative didn't play M$ and bought out Aureal... I thought Aureal was onto something with A3D 2.0.

I know there are some PCMCIA add-on cards, but none have the full capability of say the Audigy 2. Plus they cost so much.

Sorry, but I just had to get that out 🙂 Come on HP/Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, let's get some decent sounds into laptops!

Cuz there's no room to put good speakers. And if you're talking about audio out, then why not just get usb speakers? I got these yamaha usb speakers and they sound awesome on my laptop.

I was an aureal supporter until last month when i switched to a first gen soundblaster live! value and i must say that the soundblaster is a much better soundcard. Aureal was on to something and they had potential but the products they released were not so great IMO.

I am not talking about the integrated speakers... of course they suck 🙂 the laws of physics simply won't allow great sound in such small package. I am talking about the actual audio chipset. Take the Audigy, high signal-to-noise ratio, multi-speaker support, 3D sound, etc. I have a set of Klipsch with dedicated decoder, and my Inspiron gave me so much problem with drivers regarding the S/PDIF output. I have to use WinXP's default driver to get decent DirectSound and S/PDIF support!

yep, Creative definitely sounds better now, Aureal basically died after SQ2500 was done. 🙁 But if you listen to A3D 2.0 under Q3 and other supported games, you have to say that it still sounds arguably better than Creative's 3D scheme. A3D actually calculated effects with the geometry info from the game, while Creative took the easy way and did "environmental" sound, basically set parameters for say, a cave, a room, or a hall, etc.

I guess I am just saying notebooks need better sound now that decent 3D graphics is already a reality!
