South Umpqua grad killed in snow plow accident
Cameron Sharp, 18, died at Mount Bachelor ski resort
January 29, 2006
A Myrtle Creek man was killed early Friday at Mount Bachelor when a snow removal machine ran over him in the ski resort?s parking lot.
Cameron Joseph Sharp, 18, had camped out overnight in a sleeping bag placed in the parking lot of the resort outside of Bend when a worker clearing the lot of snow struck him at about 4 a.m.
Sharp, a 2005 graduate of South Umpqua High School in Tri City, had gone up to Mt. Bachelor the day before with a group of students from Lane Community College in Eugene, said his older brother, Jason Posey.
Sharp and the other students had spent Thursday snowboarding on Mt. Bachelor. The rest of the students returned home that night, while Sharp remained to take advantage of the resort?s annual free skiing day on Friday. Sharp?s roommates from Eugene had planned to meet up with him Friday and take him home that night, Posey said.
?He was up there doing something he loved. He was an avid snowboarder,? said Posey, a 1990 South Umpqua graduate who now lives in Eugene.
It took authorities some time to identify Sharp. Posey said his brother had recently lost his wallet and did not have any identification on him when he died. The Deschutes County Sheriff?s Office later identified him.
Because of regular snow removal, Mt. Bachelor does not allow overnight camping or parking for unattended vehicles. No tents or vehicles were in the area where Sharp had camped, Carly Carmichael, the resort?s marketing director, said in a release.
?Our sympathies go out to everyone associated with this tragedy,? she said in the release.
Sharp attended Lane Community College in the fall term, his brother said. Over the winter, he was working as a cook at a Eugene restaurant, he said.
His parents, Steve and Mary Sharp, live in Myrtle Creek. Steve Sharp retired last school year from his position as the principal of the Canyonville schools.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tri City Presbyterian Church, 355 Meadow Lane. Friends are asked to come and share memories of Sharp with other mourners, Posey said.
The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a memorial fund established in Sharp?s name. Donations can be made at any U.S. Bank in Oregon. The money collected will be used to pay to introduce other youngsters to snowboarding.
