Doh! 91 octane gasoline is good on the paintjob, really it is.

I stop at the same gas station every week, and hit the same pump, never had a problem. I go there this morning, start filling up my car, hop back in my car for a second to get my wallet out, and hear a really weird noise. I open the door back up to the refreshing odor of gasoline and fairly large puddle building up under my car.

Nice.

Oh well, at least it was cheap gas. The Costal I frequent is one of the last gas stations in the area to jack up the gas prices around the holidays. Other stations near it bumped up the prices $.15 a gallon yesterday to $1.10. These guys were still at $.94 a gallon this morning.

wow... this really belongs in the OT.
perhaps... an OT of OT.

so what are you doing about the gasoline smell?

That is the very reason that I never put those on auto. I've seen quite a few spills, even once saw the whole thing fall to the ground while pumping gas. It only takes 30 seconds holding on to the handle, so why risk it?

<< the lovely smell of gasoline.:disgust: >>

Actually, I like the smell of gasoline........

I do too, at least until I saw a sign stating that breathing gasoline fumes caused cancer.

30 seconds? You must be in a state with super-high pressure gas pumps, or else you drive a scooter. The pumps around me take a few minutes to pump 10 gallons, and I would rather not stand outside in the -15 degree weather pumping gas. Also, I have *NEVER* had a pump start spurting gas, they always have shut off for me. Maybe you guys need to improve your pumping techniques?

30 seconds? You must have quite a bit smaller tank than I do, I can start filling, walk inside for coffee, come back out and still have time to clean the windshield before it clicks off.

<< Isn't it actually illegaly to leave an operating pump unattended? >>

Yes it is. It is also illegal to smoke while pumping, to have the engine on while pumping, and the most frequent violation:

<< It is illegal to pump more gas after the shutoff valve has shut off the flow of gas. Many people call this topping off. >>

30 seconds: Sorry I drive a Toyota Tercel and a Honda Civic. The most I ever pump is 9 gallons. I guess those of you with SUV's have to pump 25-30 gallons and will wait almost 2 minutes. Ha ha ha!

30 seconds my ass. Stations around here take 4-6 minutes on a warm day, significantly longer when its cold.

<edit> and this is to fill up the 10 gallons of a civic. :|

Even if I had been "attending" the pump, it still would have overfilled and gone outside of the gas tank.

The clerk working the register was actually very appologetic and said that it had been happeing very frequently and that I was by no means the first person to have this happen to them frequently.

Oh, also, the wind chill here this morning was around -5, and this gas station is out in the complete open. It was by no means warm this morning.

that's nothing/ You should see what happens when you fill a boat too fast and let it kick off suddenly. Suffice it to say that you don't want to be
within 5 feet of the hole when it backs out. I still understand why they can't make a boat that will fill w/o over-flowing if not turning into a geyser.

I once had the gas strat spewing as soon as i selected what grade. I press the button and grab the handle and didnt realize that the trigger was stuck on. I hosed down all the gas stations plants in the planter and about 10 ir 15 sq foot of pavement bwefore i beat it against the pump and it kicked off heh. I pushed the car out of the range of the gas and took off.

Did you throw your zippo lighter over your shoulder and drive away with a big fireball behind you like Arnie? 😀

You must live somewhere that has crappy pumps. It only takes me about a minute to fill my car from empty (~45L - ~11 US Gallons)
