I've already beat her up enough about this so now I'll vent here.

Three years ago I helped her buy a Lenovo Z60M laptop. An AT poster gave me an employee referral code, we got a nice deal on a nice laptop. The package deal we bought had a 3 year warranty, I figured it would be good for a soon to be traveling student to be able to rely on her new $1700 laptop.

A few months ago she said her laptop was acting "weird." I usually work on her PC when she's in the US, & I knew she would be here this summer so I planned to look at it then. She didn't mention that "weird" meant randomly powering off for no reason. She also apparently forgot all about having a three year warranty, and of course it expired 5/30. Fuck.

Lenovo wants $500+ to fix it, she's a broke graduate student who absolutely needs her laptop but does not have $500. And I'm a failure of a brother for not troubleshooting better.

She's a grad student. She has a laptop with a warranty and nothing but time. And it's your fault she didn't call Lenovo for service before the warranty expiration?

Some things aren't your problem. Basic administrative responsibility is required to function in life.

She fails for not contacting Lenovo sooner. She is a college student, not an grade schooler.

I had a similar failure to diagnose recently. A friend commented that her car was "running a little warm" but said that leaving the heater on fixed it and that a shop had told her the coolant level was fine.

A couple of months later she repeated it again, and I looked at the car to find that there was no coolant at all in the reservoir tank. It had been severely overheating almost daily for the past couple of months. :(

I'm kicking myself for not immediately telling her to stop driving it.

I wouldn't bother with fixing it for $500 bux.

I would buy a new Atom/laptop for my sister as an early grad present if she is a grad student.

Your thread title was a setup for the classic "I was removing spyware and found her suction-cup dildo webcam vids" thread. Guess not.

Maybe you can make up for how much of a fail brother you are by paying for the repair ;) :p

Yeah, I saw something similar; it was the laptop owned by my sister's one friend in college. Pics.
It was experiencing lockups and shutdowns after being on for several minutes.

The heatsink's air outlet was completely blocked by a 1/2" thick layer of fine lint, and the fan was close to seizing up from dust accumulation.
