Not using onboard sound - install driver anyway?

My new mobo has onboard sound, which I won't be using. If I DO NOT install the driver, could this cause probs? Stooopid ?, I know, but I thought I'd ask anyway. 😛

There should be a way of disabling it in bios or with a jumper. If you do this then your operating system won't even know its there.

Do not install the drivers, if your not using in there is no point to letting it take up valuable IRQ's etc and other resources that could be spared.
Besides, there is always the off chance of experiencing compatibility issues if you have multiple sound cards on one system, though in most cases it's fine.

Hi Rand,

Thanks for the reply. I won't be installing the driver. IRQs are a real commodity these days, especially w/W2K using #11 for everything on the board.

I've already read the manual for my new mobo, even though I haven't gotten it yet. (Online-PDF's are a beautiful thing! 🙂) And yep, there's a setting in the bios for sound disable.

Have a nice evening. 🙂
